But seriously, I don't put a lot of value on radar detectors. CHP typically ran laser and once they hit you, the only thing your radar is good for is to tell you you're screwed. Maybe other people have had better luck than me though.

The last time I used one it gave me a really colorful notification of the massive fine coming my way. Honolulu Police didn't mess around with the Hale boys.

I never ran one in the Cobra because I honestly didn't speed. It was a bright orange Mustang, I wasn't going to get away with anything. When I did speed it was a belligerent speed, and there is nothing that saves you at 140+mph.

Oh man, 140+ MPH equivalent to over 200 FPS, I dont care what radar you have, there is no chance. By the time it alerts, you are waving hello to the officer holding the radar at you addle:. You have to admit though, its a thrilling ride.

Oh it's great, only problem is the overpasses. The freeway was 3 lanes of open road so the CHP officer who caught us had to have seen from an overpass. Maybe the fact we were all going slower and had calmed down by the time he caught up is what kept us out of jail. He didn't seem happy when he yelled at us though.

If you meant Radar Detector I would go for the Valentine V1 its a little pricy but It has saved me more than enough times when I lived out in CA. Unfortunately in VA radar is illegal here

At least some radar detectors can be detected electronically. If the man has a radar detector detector and it goes off, plan on sitting there until he finds it.

Just don't speed and you won't get tickets.

No detector is going to save you when you are going that fast, nor should you be on a public road. Rent track time and hurt yourself or wreck your own car, that's fine, but don't risk other's lives on the road who are innocent because you think you're a race car driver now with a Mustang.

By the time you even tap the brake to slow they have your speed measured with new technology and you won't get out of the ticket. This isn't 10 years ago with radar guns, many use lasers now which are instant.

I'll throw my input in. For all out range, Escort RedLine is on top when setup for your area. The Valentine is a good detector but takes a bit more setup then the Redline and still doesn't have quite the same range, but they're close. Out of the box the Escort Max is hard to beat and is great around the city, like the 9500 but with better features and ability.

Both the Redline and the V1 will be limited by terrain before you get anywhere near their range, unless you're on flat straight roads for miles ahead. Some claim the Redline does better in "off-axis" situations (with obstructions between you and the source), but I'm not 100% sold the tests are accurate.

The V1 does detect behind you reasonably well, which can help identify the threat. It wasn't a big deal to me so I went with the Redline.

As it's been said, any detector will only help if they're using radar. Also depending on the road, you usually need traffic ahead of you since most police use instant on radar. My best advice is look around on the web and see what's common on the roads you drive. Laser and planes are common in some areas, where the roads I drive use Ka band radar almost exclusively.

Laser jammers are hit and miss if they'll even work, are illegal in some states and usually only give you a few seconds to slow down. They can be left on longer, but after a certain amount of time the police will know it's being jammed and legal or not, I would not like to be in that situation. Pissed off cops can ruin your day fast.

PS. The sole reason I have one is I drive a canyon road 5-6 times per year with idiots who do 40MPH in the corners and 70MPH at the first sign of a straight or passing lane. Makes it hard to get by without a speeding more than I care to get a ticket for. I don't feel 70-75 MPH on the highway is dangerous in a car capable of going much faster.
