Things cost what people are willing to pay for them. I wanted to buy a condo about three years ago or so, and showed up at the open house and made an offer on the spot for the amount that the seller was asking for. Later that day, they got an offer from somebody else for $50K above what they were asking for. Obviously, I didn't get the condo.

Markets are markets. You can't say that it's "unethical" for a dealer to ask for more than MSRP any more than you can say that it's "unethical" for a customer to ask for less than MSRP.
Well said.

It gets annoying reading posts from people who want to be the first to buy a car and don't want to sacrifice anything for that privilege.

Its more annoying to see people just accept the games dealerships play claiming its their right to screw the educated consumer.

What is this 'privilege' crap? The privilege is my choosing to do business with a dealership . It sure as hell took more effort to earn the money to buy it than it takes the sales guy to order it. These guys aren't selling anything, just merely taking an order. Sorry I just don't see it as a privilege and I'm sure Ford is glad that I'm choosing them over any other.

No the 1, or 2 guy's paying may never complain to you about the ADM, but the 10 guy's that you asked to pay the ADM's will, or have. The problem is the same 10 guy's ..(or so) will tell 10 more guy's and so on.....It just do not make sence in the long run, its nothing more than short term greed..NO offence !
Trust me I take 0 offence and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Agreed. I'm willing to pay for good service. Two or three thousand dollars is nothing in the grand scheme of things to get a good purchasing experience.

Exactly I agree. 15k is 100% unfair but depending on the vehicle I see nothing wrong with 1k to 5k ADM, just over that it starts to get very sketchy.

Those Customer's might like your Dealership, but I bet they complain about your ADM's, just not to your face. I think adding ADM's period is not a proper way to do
business. MSRP is a fair price for any Dealer, or Customer. no disrespect intended.
Considering the relationships I have with these customers I can tell you right now they don't complain. Probably half the referrals I have come from people who paid ADM on a specialty vehicle. Now of course the reason for that has nothing to do with the ADM and when it comes to other vehicles I always give the best pricing with the same level of service regardless.

The seller has the privilege of my interest and my money when they can meet my requisites. Paying ADM's is not a privilege is a disgusting practice condoned by scumbags and perpetuated by idiots.

You've just lost all your credibility here as an respectable salesperson. There is a definite problem considering the Margins you are gifted with just the MSRP to inflate the cost even more to your clientele. This says nothing positive about you.

This certainly tells me the type of client you deal with is not very together with their priorities and possibly have penis envy issues amoung their circle of friends that causes them to throw logical thinking out the window...to the detriment of the rest of us..

Or

They are lying to those referrals about getting a great deal and simply neglect to mention they paid more than the MSRP on the vehicle to save themselves the embarrassment of that reference saying"are you retarded?"

The experience of the sale is not what makes them happy...its getting what they want against all logical reasoning that makes them happy. You're dealing with a classical "entitlement" personality here. Still doesn't make you a role model for good morals and ethical practices.

If you take offense to this.....then you only confirm it.

Plenty of those types at Barrett-Jackson. I don't care how much I make nor what wealth I accumulate, I'll never be that guy as I have nothing to prove. If I did I certainly wouldn't be looking at a Mustang. But that's not what its about for me.

You would be the type of salesperson that would find themselves doing well for a very long time. Short term greed never pans out over long term loyalty.

I would be this guy:

http://www.frederickscatpack.com

He gets it. He's sold so many performance Challengers over the years and is the go to guy nationwide for Hellcats and other SRT vehicles.

These Ford guys could be absolutely killing it like this guy. I understand Shelby's are limited but the GT's and other Fords aren't. Social media, forums, word of mouth etc. They leave so much on the table by playing small ball.

This is a splendid example of how our economy failed. (we sold product to people who could not afford it, resulting in foreclosure, repos, bankruptcies) Our Market economy grows on folks paying more for something of value. If every product was the same price regulated by the government, we'd be socialist. I have done my share of bargaining for products that are basically limitless and I've paid big $$$ for things I wanted really bad. To accuse Ford Dealers of being corrupt or any other not so nice comments posted here is wrong. That is like saying Macy's should sell their limited jeans for the same price as Wal-Mart. There are over 3500 DEALERS eligible to enroll to get at least 1 car, it costs $1000 for them to enroll. Expect them to roll this cost into the ADM. If the car does not sell, the prices will fall. The expectations that the manufacturer should sell direct are ridiculous, Telsa's model will fail eventually, their current customer base is not worried about payments, trade ins, leases....etc. If you bought straight from Ford, who will do your warranty work. Could you imagine buying all of your durable goods from the manufacturer? A crazy business model to say the least, sorry but the middle man is a necessity. I'll leave you with one question, name one regular price product you can buy where the manufacture profit margin is less than 25% at a retail store? (outside of an american made car)

Dealerships and Service don't necessarily operate under the same umbrella. One often doesn't know what the other is doing. An authorized service center is not part of a bad business model. It can stand on its own.

You're basically calling manufacturer's like" Apple", which is as American as apple pie, socialist in their business model.

Tesla is succeeding much to your disappointment. They are successful and selling. And guess what, they also contribute to a used car market and rentals which can then resell these vehicles at whatever they want in the American non-socialist way you're eluding to That should satisfy your need to get screwed over by a dealer.

And BTW...they make a great American car. Oh well I guess free thinking that they can offer the buying public a better buying experience by selling directly is just so un-American.

The competition is already established between the different manufacturers. The freedom of choice is already there. The freedom to buy things at a fair price is what the socialist minded dealerships are taking away from you. If you want to embrace inflated costs when we've already established that MSRP was designed to make the dealers money and that they still make money even after they pay their dealer cost for that vehicle then you have every right to seek out a dealer and walk to the center of the selling floor ....pull down your pant past your knees, grab your ankles and announce to your audience I'm READY come and screw me please.

You have every right to do so in the American way of course.

It boils down to this...No one can, or is going to stop Dealers from charging a mark-up's ,if that's what they want to do...(know one here is saying that) The thing I think most are saying is don't charge one, and you have the opportunity to get more of my business, my friends business, and my family members business, and decrease the opportunity to get "dogged" in conversation when people talk about your dealership...Im mean crap, were only taking about several cars to be sold a year...Why screw up your dealer's reputation over a few thousand dollars..thats just pure stupidity.

Uh you're wrong there buddy. If the direct buy model is embraced by the public and the public demand is warranted ...things will change. You wouldn't think 10 years ago that Marijuana would be legal in any capacity.

Talk to me now.

The dealer consortium in each state is going to have a tough argument to continue on their current selling model. Their lobbyists will have a harder time convincing the government to continue as is with the public demand growing and of course the Manufacturers throwing their own lobbyists in the mix to embrace the changes.

Again... if you're a dealer...enjoy it while you can. in the future you'll just be an order taker. And that's completely in the spirit of a free market in the American way.

What should be said is that it's their right to ask for it and it's your right to go to another dealer. Pretty simple choice and not all the argument needed.
