Front end Mach 1 PPF

Hey guys. I think I have zeroed in on my mach 1. Its very low mile and very mint. I am thinking about geting the front end PPF'd before I start driving it a lot. I am a hair confused about the hood and what to do with the decal. They said I can PPF right over it to protect it as well. Who has done this? Any Advice or experiences?

do not PPF over the hood decal. go around it. also, do the rear lower quarters, in front and behind the tires. and the rear deck (the black plastic piece). and the hood is not a bad idea.

in fact, within 300 miles I had a rock chip on the truck lid. So maybe just do the whole car....

I did the entire front, quarter and behind rear tire area. When I have to remove the PPF I’ll decide at that time to do a decal delete or replace them.

My PPF guy said he goes around the Mach decal on the hood , Im leaning towards half the front end and includes the head lights mirrors . Crazy my trunk lid has a tiny chip, happened before I purchased the car . Chips can happen anywhere on the car . I'm not going to PPF the whole car but add the A puller ,I got one their,I was able to touch up .

I had a couple choices, matte finish over the decal and glossy over the rest of the car. I just went glossy over the entire front end. I did do the pillars and partial roof. I’m happy with it. The PPF is XPEL.

You have three options:

1. Install PPF across the entire hood with one piece. If you have a FJG car, people have done this. Something with those cars it was found to be OK. If you have any other color, it is generally not recommended. Over time, the PPF tends to lift where the decal meets the paint. PPF cannot make a sharp transition like that.

2. Do nothing. This is what I did. Many installers have access to vehicle databases. The PPF is cut on a large plotter and then installed. I have PPF right up to the decal edge. I left the decal "naked"; it's not protected and considered a sacrificial layer. While not as strong as PPF, any debris has to get past that first.

3. Install a "ghost" portion of PPF. Matte PPF. Select option 2. Once that's installed, they can cut a piece just for the decal and blend it. This can look really good. But it adds to the cost. Benefits are subjective.

I've only had the car four years, but the decals are holding up very well. PPF has a service life of about 10 years. It's then expected to be replaced. I'll replace all the decals then.

Doing the front third of the car is a good idea. Get the A-pillars as well. The headlights. Consider the length of the rocker areas. Behind the wheel arches. All forward-facing areas. Anywhere the wheels will kick up rocks. And front mud gaurds.

My installer is an Xpel franchisee. As part of any agreements, they are given access to Xpel's vehicle database, something akin to a large repository of CAD drawings. Using large plotters, they cut PPF for one panel at a time, install it, then go on to the next panel.

The painted area of my hood is covered in PPF. The decal is not. The PPF as it came off he plotter had a blank section where the decal is, but was otherwise one piece. The PPF goes right up to the edge of the decal and stops.

An additional option for the decals is ceramic coating. While not offering impact protection like PPF, ceramic coating will protect the decal from the elements. This might be worthwhile for a vehicle which sits outside or is a Daily Driver.

Ok perfect, I the car I am in the process of acquiring is a Fighter Jet Grey colored car, but I am still learning toward what you did. I know if the edges show lines around the graphic I wont be happy with that outcome.

This is one thread I found on the discussion between FJG cars and other colors. The FJG cars, the decals had a different texture on the hood. While several covered their hoods, the discussion I referenced is now a few years old.

Initially, you could pass on the hood decal. After the installing PPF elsewhere, you can always return and have them install a matte ghost portion over the decal only, ceramic coat it or leave the decal alone.

Lots of great options. Your installer can discuss the pros and cons of each.

I had the complete front end of my Mach 1 PPF applied. I did both front fenders, the front end, the headlights, the hood, the front pillars, and 11 inches from the top of the front windshield back.
The guy that did the PPF work on mine cut around the decal and because the decal is a matte finished, he applied a matte finish PPF to the decal.

Is it a local guy that does fantastic work. You can’t even tell it on mine that there’s PPF applied. He installed XPEL PPF.

When he did the front fenders, he actually removed the lettering and reapplied it. You cannot tell the difference. It all depends on who you get to do the work.

Total cost about 2k.

Mine is FJG and I did apply the PPF over it.
This is the only decal that can have PPF applied over the top of it.
I did the entire nose, A pillars and the front section of the roof, rocker panels, behind the rear wheels to include part of the rear bumper and the top section of the bumper where the trunk opens.

Cool, No issues with lines or anything around the edges of the decal?
