Even “good” performance tires are often a death sentence if they are cold or wet. IMO the only “safe” street tires are ECS02, PS4S, and A052.
even my ps4s will hydroplane like a motha______

I swear when i had PSS on my FR-S i never hydroplaned a bit, but those were 225s on 8" wheels versus these 275s on 10"

3 things never to cheap out on is Tires, Brakes and insurance. If you cant afford the tires that suit the car sell it and buy a car you can afford the tires for.
Most modern cars can cope with crap fuel as the ECM will adjust itself but if you are driving in heavy rain and 4 bits of Chinese rubber wont grip when a person walks out in front of you how will you feel then ?
A lot of Chinese cars are now sold around the world in various countries but none of them have Chinese branded tires on them, if they are any good why are they are not fitting them ?

Well I probably went through 3 sets of Atturo tires on the rear for every 1 set of Michelins on the front. I DD my GT and love burnouts, do a couple a month on average. So there was no reason for me to waste a set of Michelins on the rear to a cloud of smoke, and I've never had a cheap tire not do what it was supposed to for me. It's not like my car was getting loose on turn 3 at Talladega to and from work everyday.

Common theme being people don’t know how to drive, not that they have bad tires.
Not according to the scrappers.

That's one of the reasons why I decided to put all seasons on the Camaro. Hydroplaning on wide summer only Michelins with Mustangs. They are pretty good on a wet road, but if the water is a little deeper, your control is gone. There's a spot in my daily commute where there's a corner at the bottom of a hill. I almost crashed in the GT350 as well as my 2017 GT driving in too much water. The front end just decided to go whatever direction it wanted to. No control at all. I wasn't driving fast or doing anything dumb either time. Just driving with traffic.

I agree it's not a good idea to "cheap out" on tires. However, I don't agree that every tire not listed in the top 2 in Tire Rack tests or anything other than Michelin is "too cheap" or unsafe. I've been satisfied with Firestone Indy 500s and General GMAX RS, which performed very similarly for me as the Continental ECS 02. A friend bought a set of Falken FK510s in a pinch when he was out of town and ended up being pleasantly surprised by them. There are options that can be a good value if max performance under hard driving isn't your top priority.

If you want to hydroplane, try a giant carbon fiber dual element race wing, no front aero to balance it out, and 4 year old nearly bald MP4S.

"Performed very similarly" in what context? when casually grocery getting? 😂

If that's your priority and metric of comparison, then yes they're great value. I joke lol.

But....how about 60-0mph braking in dry? In wet? Avoiding collisions at 70mph? 40mph? How about if it was a kid in the road and better tires made the difference, does that change anything for you?

I value safety and performance above saving $500 every 20K--30K miles. It's a no brainer, money value proposition. There have been a dozen times in the past 2 decades where I 100% believe my tires were the determining factor in avoiding a crash. I'm so thankful I understood the value in getting the best tire I can afford. I can only hope the same for everyone else we share the road with.

I 100% agree, there is no point in regretting you wished you had bought better tires when you about to hit something or worse someone.

I want the tire everyone else says theirs is “as good as“ whatever tire that happens to be.

You guys make a good point re: safety, but keep in mind a car fitted with even cheaper summer tires like the Firestone Indy 500s will have more grip and braking power than 80% of the cars on the road.

source? my ass, but i have a good feeling about it. Just like chatgpt.

With that mentality if you don't avoid an accident and had "the tire" maybe you shouldn't have cheaped out and went with a mustang when other cars handle or stop better? LOL Just stirring...kinda.

I mean i guess, yeah, if i had more money i probably wouldn't drive my Mustang GT. It's a decent car elevated by a fantastic v8 but of course there are better cars out there. We all have to do our best with what we can afford 😁

Truth is…. there aren't too many cars near that price or many others that actually can stop better than a Mach 1. I think the brakes on any modern mustang are enough to expose tire limitations on braking.

I've had all 3 sets of tires on spirited runs at tail of the dragon and other fun roads. Handling and traction during hard cornering was very similar. If you're pushing it hard enough to where the absolute dry road holding limit of one versus another makes a difference, you're being stupid.

There have been a dozen times in the past 2 decades where I 100% believe my tires were the determining factor in avoiding a crash.
If you find yourself making frequent panic stops and avoidance maneuvers, maybe it's not the "other guy." :)
