Hey everyone,

I recently had an Alpine dash cam installed on my newly purchased Mach 1. The dash cam itself is great but they really had to manhandle the headliner a bit. Both of the pillar covers on the passenger side were sitting loose and I had to snap them back into place, which wasn't a big deal, but the edge of the headliner where they fed the cable on the passenger side took a bit of a beating. The Styrofoam is bent downward and hanging about a centimeter or so lower than the driver side, and the fabric itself is beginning to pull away and sag. I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue and knows of a remedy. I picked up some headliner fabric glue but haven't used it yet.

Thanks!

I have the same issue on my 2021 Mach and I haven’t been able to resolve. It drives me nuts 🤣

I’ve also tried the recommended fixes and they have not worked.

Anyone try the spray on 3M fabric glue? I used that stuff to recover the rear parcel shelf of an old e34 M5 and the stuff worked really well. The fabric held really well.

Dang, that's a bummer. Your headliner hangs on the passenger side too?

Actually my issue is on both sides of the headliner, both passenger and driver’s side hang below.
That sucks! I think tomorrow I'm gonna take a crack at the fabric. Still undecided on how to go about the foam lining.

You said "they", so it might be good to go to the manager of the business and ask for a remedy. Hopefully he/she will step up and fix the issue...it the business is customer focused. It is possible they've had this issue before and have already found a solution. But then, ensure the manager is 100% confident the repair will not be a "patch job".

As for a comment about 3M/Scotch adhesive, I use their 77 product and it is very good stuff. However, what I use is the aerosol spray product, and you sure don't want to have that being airborne to places you don't want it. There are some really good contact cements, but be careful to liberally mask anything you don't want adhesive on, and place drip cloths under the working area. If it is indeed contact cement where you apply to 2 different surfaces, wait then bond...ensure you don't prematurely let the 2 surfaces contact until you guarantee aligned placement. (It's not coming loose once you contact the 2 surfaces).

Correct, I had the dash cam installed by an audio shop that is certified by Alpine. And you’re right. I was worried I’d come across as picky for something as minor as this, but it wouldn’t hurt to consult the shop about it. Especially if the headliner could potentially get worse over time. Thanks!

For loose fabric, usw 3M headliner spray. Any other glue wont hold up to the hot summer months.

Spray it onto a piece of cardboard in a pool then dab it onto the problem areas with a small toothpick or makeup applicator. It is a bit too messy if you try to just spray it directly.

Mines pulling out from the driver side... 3M gonna hold that?

There are two American chemical companies whose products have never let me down. 3M and Clorox.
Agree there! ^^^

Also as others have mentioned above, do NOT try to use the 3M Aersol with the headliner IN the vehicle in that tight location - the spray will go EVERYWHERE….

The proper fix would be to remove the headliner completely from the vehicle and do the readhesion repair attempt IF the their just needs the material reglued.

However if the foam backer board is damaged/bent etc. from the shop’s inconsiderate installers - there is no way to fix the backer board. Once it’s been badly bent or damaged in a way that it will not bend back into place. It’s done. 3M adhesive will not fix a damaged backer board, it will only work for regluing the headliner material to the backer board.

From your images did you try to push up/tuck the material edging?

I’m assuming the installer pulled the board down using hands or a plastic pry tool, which bent the edges of the backer board. The material seen, the upholsterer contracted to Ford did not have super razor edge cuts on the material edges…. If you were to remove the headliner from the car, or even say peel back the rubber weather strip in the interior door roof line, the edge of the material looks the same as the front edge and rear edge by the window glass. It’s just exasperated in your image due to the installer being an idiot and pulling on the leading edge of the board, possibly bending the board out of shape or cracking the board edge.

I would go back to the Shop and ask for the owner or Manager and show them the problem. The only thing is, you’ve already taken possession of the car and left their property. So they could turn around and say it’s your word against theirs as to the precondition and existing condition of the headliner…
