Heat and UV are tire killers and time is next in line. They are made to be used not just sit. Drive the wheels off means just that. Replace them when needed and enjoy your car. Find tires that feel good for your style of driving and enjoy the ride. If you can't afford the tires then you can't afford the car.

I agree with all that :like:

But this bit :

Heat and UV are tire killers and time is next in line.
Doesn't really apply to the UK as much as other parts of the world, yet the MPS4S really seems to suffer over here ... ?

Not just my set, but also my brothers, and my cousins.

My set are now really screwed (new wheels arriving any day now), yet they are the same age, sit in the same place, see an identical environment, and get the same wash and care chemicals on them as the tyres on my daily - which are still 'mint' ... ? 🤷‍♂️

In the experience of the three noted above, the tread edge cracking (I guess on the joint between two compounds) starts to show itself at about 18 months / two years.

Is it possible to tell the wear from the way the grooves are visible (or not) on the tyre? This is the front MPS4S (255/40) after cca 10k mi (and few track sessions).
I am not the worried about the tread depth, but the one part of the profile - the section which is not in the middle not on the side and is separated by the bigger grooves (and has no visible grooves) has a delicate texture to the touch. I am not sure if it is the just the material, or some lower layer starting to protrude. Nothing is visible though, only felt.

Haha. Gets used how it should. I’m astonished by some of the high miles people get from there tyres. I guess a lot of show ponies/ garage queens out there. Each to their own.
I just don't do burn outs really. I drive like a racer on the freeways. But I don't do a lot of turning anymore since I moved away from Monterey. Lots of windy roads to get home from the Bay Area. Instead. I just do a straight line down 101.

A Tire tread depth gauge is dirt cheap and eliminates guessing. Can be found a reputable automotive stores for a buck or two. Maybe on Amazon. Also the age of the tire can be deduced by a date code on the side of the tire. Those two pieces of info are all you need to determine whether or not to replace from a tire condition point of view. Ride quality, handling, road noise those are all based on experience or information from known trusted sources. Like here. Those tires look new compared to what I replaced. Mine were 3 summer seasons old.

How's the alignment and tire pressure on the front Muric? Could that be an issue? I don't have any experience with those tires so not sure how they should wear.

What is the road surface? Black top, cobble stones, concreate, those tires look as though they have been running on cobble stones. While I was in Germany my tire had that same appearance and most of the road surfaces were cobble stones.

Some of it is lack of places to drive it in anger. The crap I did in the 80's you could talk your way into a warning, today it is impounded and a pile of tickets.
What little track days there are near me, Are all on week ends, fair enough. My Job is mainly focused on week ends So getting to a track day is very hard . It is what it is.

I live in the city , but I’m very lucky to have some pretty decent roads in the middle of nowhere to have some fun. This road is on the way to my best mates 2500 acre farm. It’s 2 hrs drive though the mountains to his place with small fun sections like this. he has a mustang as well. so We have a little fun. Some days you’re lucky to see a car. I’m heading there tomorrow for my oil change and maintenance. We do both our cars together on the hoists. it sure makes a fun weekend talking shit , working on mustangs and a bit of mountain driving for good measure.

We also have some draconian laws here in Australia , speed limit 100 kph ( 60 mph) and big fines for not much over the limit.

15k-20k on 2018 GT350 with pilot sport or Nitto G2.

Far less if I routinely go ham with the car.

The tread depth is about 1/4" (measured by calipers). I agree that by the depth I am not worried. I was more interested in knowing if some "inherent" features of the rubber profile could be used to determine the wear. Plus the strange tactile feeling along the mid inner patch.
How's the alignment and tire pressure on the front Muric? Could that be an issue? I don't have any experience with those tires so not sure how they should wear.
There are no signs of an uneven wear along the whole patch. The alignment was fine every time I checked (the last time was before this season).
What is the road surface? Black top, cobble stones, concreate, those tires look as though they have been running on cobble stones. While I was in Germany my tire had that same appearance and most of the road surfaces were cobble stones.
Road surfaces here (Czech Rep.) are similar to those in Germany (or France) as far as I know albeit with worse maintenance or repair. But nothing exceptionally different.

I suspect that the strange feeling is probably due to a different composition of this particular patch and/or recent track session.

I made it 48K miles on my rear Michelin 4's. Only made it about 15k miles on my fronts. Doing much better with Goodyear Exhilarates. still at 8/10 and i'm at 20k miles on the 4 set.

You got less mileage out of your fronts than rears on mp4s?

Yep! I had a terrible alignment from factory and it chewed through the inner tires and I didn't catch it in time to correct it.

Now I have camber bolts on both front tires to keep them in spec. Just had my most recent alignment performed. The Goodyear's are holding up well. But I don't abuse my car on windy roads. I just go fast on the long straights.
