Undercoating? Por15 or other options.

While under my car to try to fix a broken bolt I noticed a large amount of rust for a 2017. Differential and rear subframe have surface/flaking rust. Angle that holes the evap below the spare tire well is at the point where it crumbles to ashes if you touch or push on it, rear bumper brace and body of the car is rusted bad. Like thick layers of rust flaking off rusty easily 1/16 in thick or thicker layers coming off. Everything else has surface rust. Already replaced the drive shit and exhaust which removed a lot of the visible rust but there's still a ton more. Any tips? Obviously I can't fix the bracket for the evap since the rust in in-between the angle and body so without cutting it off fully it'll be stuck but it's the bottom of the tire well, if it rusts out that's fine I'll cut it out later and weld in a new piece of sheet metal. My biggest concerns are the differential (appears to be common and I can't find anyone who ever had an issue from the rust besides it looks bad) and the res bumper. It was raining while I was under the car and I could watch the water poor down exactly where it was several rusted so I assume during winter the salter water is dripping down and sitting there. How do I fix or prevent this?
Take it for an undercoating?
Remove the bumper and use a wire wheel to break off any loose rust and por15? Or any other coating? Or just ignore it drive the car and forget about it. It's a 2017 with 62k miles (more issues than it's worth tbh. Paid 27.5k 2 years ago at 52k miles and I've probably spent well over 10k in parts and labor fixing all the issues as they lol up. Not worth it to me at this point to sell it at a loss so I'll be keeping it for awhile I think

I doubt my car has any warranty. It's been in several accidents and changed owners many times

Yeah I was right. Quick Google reveals Ford does not offer a 10 year warranty. Why would they. Most of their vehicles won't even make it to 5 let alone 10. All they do is a 5 year rust/perforation warranty. No 10 year exists for 15-17

I have 117K on my 2011 V6 and it is clean and free of rust and so is my 2015 GT free of rust. I don't drive them in the winter. I have a winter beater for that. I don't know that undercoating will help much now.

I know Ford's are notorious for rust issues so I'm just trying to fix and stop further issues. Hell my buddy's 2024 f150 split the frame down both sides of the truck front to back from rusting inside out in less than 8 months. Quality vehicles don't exist anymore

I wouldn't apply any sort of rubberized undercoating. They only trap any moisture that gets past them and it's impossible to apply it perfectly.
Were it mine, I would remove as much loose and flaking rust as I could. Then I would treat it liberally with Por15 or a similar rust neutralizing product. I'd also consider using Fluid Film and/or a cavity wax on everything else. Especially the nooks and cranies where you can't get the Por 15. The Fluid Film claims to penitrate abd neutralize rust.
It will take quite a bit of work but I feel like you should be able to stabilize the damage and get many more years out of it.
Also, any future repairs you make should be treated as well for prevention.

Funny, as I recall "Body by Fisher" meant rust all over everything (that's who made Chevy car bodies that rusted through at the rear window corners, door jambs, rocker panels, etc., etc. and back then the Fords didn't rust like that at all).

If I got it coated I would take it to. Shop that does an oil undercoating or similar. I'm also debating painted the entire underside with a light to meanudium cost of oai

Back then cars were built tough. Now they are built out of paper and spit. One strong breeze knocks em down. Besides comsmetically the best looking I don't think I'll ever buy a mustang newer than 2017. 18+ to current have far to many issues and drawbacks vs older ones. Cheaper to make a 2005+ make and durable than watch a new one fall apart in a couple years

You're right. It's from poor collision repair they usually skip the 2-3 costs etch primer before applying high solids primer just to cut costs since this can be wet on wet application. Often on new metal parts hidden elements they will just paint right over the new part primer after a quick scotchbrite.

I would dump that car fast. No way to stop rust unless cut it out.

Lol I'm not dumping a car because of rust. Every single car will rust there. It's just a bad design by Ford. Any and all water that hits the trunk and back window is directly towards that small spot. If you live around an area that salts that means salt gets out in there and it sits since car washes would never touch that spot. Not even undercarriage sprayers. Stuck in-between spot welds aswell. It's not from collision repair eithervits all OEM. Did some digging and it appears pretty common for s550s to rust there. I'll bet you have some rust there too but no one ever really looks there because there's no reason to unless the rear bumper is off and your replacing that crash bar

You are right with regards to the crash bars, they are crap ...

I don't think they get the e coat thing, I'm 99% sure the front doesn't as its left off so the e coat can get down the chassis legs.

I think they are essentially a (poorly) primered part, that's then bolted on before the top coat, and it only receives a very light dusting of top coat, with no clear.

The rear is mostly hidden (unless you look directly up above the exhaust tips), but the trunk gutters dump onto it. If you get staining on the outside of the tips, there is a chance its drips from above.

The front is better hidden on a 15, and more exposed on an 18.

On an 18 where it can be seen more easily, get down level with it so your eye is looking straight through the grill honeycomb, and you can see the unsealed edge on the top spot weld.

I have seen that area rusting, on new cars, still on the forecourt ... (rusty water in the seam on light coloured cars).

Fix the rust issues you have and then go to a place like Krown Rust proofing. I Googled and it says there are shops in Pennsylvania. I've owned my car for thirteen years now and drive it through the crappy road salt Canadian winters. So far so good however I've had them spray the car every year since new. It's about $140 CAD.

Fix the rust issues you have and then go to a place like Krown Rust proofing. I Googled and it says there are shops in Pennsylvania. I've owned my car for thirteen years now and drive it through the crappy road salt Canadian winters. So far so good however I've had them spray the car every year since new. It's about $140 CAD.

I'll look into it. Some of the stuff I probably won't both with, ie surface on diff housing and suspension since there's not much I can do and I'm not dropping the entire irs. I will do my best to clean up the rear bumper rust but the rust there and by the evap will never be gone fully it's rusting from in-between the pieces of metal that I can't access. Best I can do is wire wheel the visible stuff and spray some rust converter paint or por15 or something. But unless krown takes the bumpers off the car they won't be able to spray that area from just below. Here's the only photo I have really that shows it. I can take more later if you want, this photo is of the connection point for the rear bumper crash bar/ brace.

Early prevention is the only way to win the battle. Once you have significant rust it's a losing proposition. You can slow to an extent, but salt and corrosion always win.
