Hi Everyone,

I purchased a new 2022 GT500 last year, and ran into my first issue a couple weeks back.

Starting maybe 2ish weeks ago the car will make a grinding noise when lightly braking from 20MPH down to zero after the brakes have been warmed up a bit. When this occurs I don't notice any resistance in the pedal, but I can feel it slightly in the wheel. Hard, and/or fast stops produce no issue.

I took the car to the dealership and they were able to recreate the issue, but did not troubleshoot beyond inspecting it on a lift. They told me my pads look good, and nothing is bent or broken around the front of the car.

They also told me this is normal, because the massive brakes are stopping a lot of mass, which when done slowly, at low speeds, with light brake pressure produces the noise and sensation.

I'm not sure I believe them, so I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. I have not had much luck searching the various forums and communities.

The car only has 7k miles on it, and it has never been tracked.

If it's not normal I'm trying to decide if I want to take the car to a local brake shop, or back to the dealer.

Thanks!

sounds like you need some brake "grease" on the backside of your pads .do you have the time and tools to jack it up and take a wheel off and lube the brake parts?

I don't have a "grind" per say, but the GT350s and 500s are notorious for noisy squeaky brakes, and mine squeak on light pressure stops

I assumed it was just par for the territory with these huge brakes and "performance" pads I'd assume they use

Yes I have the brake dust squeak for sure, which I had on my GT350, and ZL1. This is an actual grind. It sort of sounds like the same noise ships make when their hulls expand and contract (in movies anyways, I have never been on a ship!).

So just to be clear, you bought a new '22 from a Ford dealer and put 7,000 miles on it and the grinding noise you are hearing is a recent development, correct?

I've had this on the OEM pads. They stop great but can make some chatter occasionally. Switched to Z26 pads. Zero noise, way less dust, no problems. Ymmv

Correct - It is a heritage edition that was sitting on a lot for 2 years because the dealer wanted waaaay too much money for it, so they let me have it for MSRP last April.

When I took delivery the car had 150 miles on it, so 99% of the driving has been my miles. I sincerely do not recall this occurring at all last year. It immediately caught my attention when it started happening a couple weeks back. I feel like if it was doing this all along I would have noticed given (1) my driving habits have not changed, and (2) I noticed it immediately when it did begin occurring.

A grind isn't normal. Does it sound localized to a particular wheel, or front/back? If it was anything significantly wrong with the brakes, I'd expect scoring/marks on the caliper, rotors, pads, or rims somewhere. It's possible that the back of the pad could use some brake grease or you lost a retaining clip on the pad.

Have you checked the axle nuts to make sure they are on good and tight? I would mark them with a paint line to make sure they aren't backing off.

A grinding noise could also be a bad wheel bearing. With the car jacked up, you should be able to hug the wheel and see if there is any wobble in the wheels.

Good luck!

If it was actually sitting outside on the lot, there might be some corrosion in there. Just take it apart, clean, grease, bust any rust, you'll be fine.

update - I took it back to the same dealership and asked them to try again. This time they confirmed my front right rotor is indeed warped, so they are replacing (at cost).

Unrelated (but sort of related) bummer is my right rear half shaft needs to be replaced. I say this is a bummer, because my car was in the shop last Friday having the same replacement done, so in a week of not driving the car the same part needs to be replaced again!
