Hey guys, just doing some research for my upcoming project to install an ESS kit on my 21GT. I'm going back and fourth on if I should do the work or have a shop install/test/tune for me. A reputable shop in ATL gave a decent quote for an ESS install, but mentioned adding a billet oil pump gear set and billet crank sprocket. Now the ESS install was a great price, but the gear set almost doubled it.

My question is...is it worth doing the billet gear set? Is this something a lot of FI guys do? I don't plan on going crazy with boost...probably a G3 with 120 pully and 93 tune.

You don't need them. I'd leave them as is.

And the install is easy, I would also recommend doing the install yourself, if you can use basic hand tools.

If it makes you feel any better, I run the 100mm pulley on my wonderful MT-82 and ring the car out to 7900rpm and I have made a couple whoopsies on the limiter (I don't recommend doing this though, lol)... stock engine still holding up good. Been boosted around 15,000 miles or so now.

Seems like you don't hear about many broken opg in the last few years. It could be that it was more a gen2 weak point. The early gen3 got a fluid damper stock, but I believe mid-2019 they switched back to elastomeric. Another thing that I think is/was a problem is that tuners were raising the soft-limiter (throttle controlled) above the hard limiter (fuel cut), not fully understanding what they were doing at the time. I still run across this sometimes. Make ABSOLUTELY SURE your tuner has the fuel cut limiter set 2-300 rpm above the soft limiter.

Great replies, thanks guys!! As for doing it myself, very tempting, how's the spark plug job with these engines?? Is it a shit show or pretty easy? The tuning shop quoted just over 2k for the install labor, tune and dyno.

I only had slight trouble with the back passenger side plug, but if I remember correctly I just had to piece together some extensions and swivels and it was fine after that. Spring time I get to do it over again and swap in some new ones. Not that bad at all.

I'd do the install yourself and get a tune by one of a guys that really know this platform. I've seen guys go to local shops and end up with a shitty tune and paying twice.

Passenger side really is the hard one. Take the battery box out and it's a straight shot. $2k for the install, tune and dyno is a great price if they know what they are doing tuning.

same thing we tell everyone, its not required, but, if you think you may be using a tb or 2 step, or hitting the limiter at all like running it out, its good protection

There was literally a thread on OPGs a few days ago on here with a poll.

Ya, saw that...tons of good info for sure! For my thread, I also wanted to get opinions on the price I was quoted for the install labor/tune/dyno and didn't want to hijack that thread.

Good call. Pricing for that stuff seems to be a large range from what I've seen people post on here. Good luck

What daSNAK3 said, you don't need them. I have the same setup, G3 120mm 93 octane. Just don't get crazy and bounce the car off the limiter and you will be fine.
Looking at the price difference between G2 and G3...wonder if a G2 with a 115mm and the G3 intercooler would work? I don't want to go much past 700 anyway.

They are going to tell you not to run the 115mm pulley on the Gen 3.. G3 will make better power and be more efficient, I’d spend the couple hundred extra and get the G3 w/ 120mm
