I posted this question on SVT a few days ago and haven't gotten a response so thought I would try here, this seems like a much more active community. I tried doing a google search but didn't get much for results, so let me ask this. How does the base GT that doesn't have selectable driving modes compare to a premium that does? Will the premium model in track mode beat the base GT in performance assuming it's the same driver? I'm just more curious as to how the base model is tuned compared to one that you can change the settings on.

Base has steering modes but not the driving modes. Driving modes control throttle and traction control systems. In the base you can control traction control as well. Essentially the only thing you don't get is the throttle mapping changes. That doesn't change power output. The cars will perform equally.

It's strange that they don't provide the driving modes for all GTs, not just premium.

The GT is the performance model. A more luxury trim shouldn't matter...

I'm sure the car is prewired for this anyway. Should just be a switch replacement (toggles), and possibly a controller.

That's what I am thinking too, I plan on possibly swapping out the base console for the premium one in the future if it is possible. The toggle switches are the only thing I want from the premium trim.

I want the toggles and the a/c controls, they can keep the rest. I may get the leather covers for my recaros too...

I really wanted the toggles as well just didn't have the extra money for the premium. I like all the buttons for the console, makes it feel like a cockpit, but how did Ford save money buy making you pay extra to have a touch screen? I would think it would cost more to have to produce two different types of dashes and the equipment for all the buttons then just having the machines to produce touch screens in all the models. My 18k Veloster I had before had a 7" touchscreen.

I have the touch screen in my '13 f150, it's nothing special.... That's why I didn't opt for it in this one. Sync sucks...

Track mode gets sharpened throttle response for a more direct feel with the throttle, and traction control (AdvancedTrac) intervention is reduced and tuned for track usage.

So to answer your question, Yes it is possible that the Premium equipped GT has the potential with Track mode engaged to beat the base GT if all other variable were equal, but only if you were driving past the limits of the car and it was continually intervening, therefore slowing you down overall in the Base GT.

In the grand scheme of things, on the street or at a drag race, where 99%+ of Mustangs are driven, you won't see any difference in performance between the Base GT and Premium GT.

What I dont understand is how these driving nannies with "improved" throttle response and steering are going to do anything other than completely screw with my driving. Improved isn't just better, it's different. I don't see myself looking like a hero when I change all the settings different from how they've been for the last few thousand miles of driving on the road and coming out looking like a hero, I see it ending in disaster. Why would I want the pedal or steering wheel to do anything different from what I am programmed to expect them to do for every input I give? This balogne has me fearing a new "performance" car. It took me months to get used to my newish truck intentionally cutting all power for a split second and slowly increasing throttle on its own when Id attempt to merge into fast moving traffic and put the pedal to the floor. Nothing like expecting over 300hp and recieving 50 at that exact moment.

In fact I even had an experience in my 04gt with just traction control that could have ended horribly. I usually always hit the traction control button to turn it off every time I started the car but forgot to for some reason this time. It was a cold rainy morning and I made a very sharp but slow left turn coming out of my neighborhood. Half way through the turn the back starts to slip out unintentionally and I countersteer and give it some light throttle to straighten it out but instead I get no power thanks to traction control trying to save me.

I was going so slow that it wasn't too big a deal and I still saved it before getting anywhere near the curb but if there had been a car parked on the street that delay in power would have probably ruined my day.

I don't know how the driving modes compare from a base to a premium. I can tell this though, comparing my 2015 Premium to my previous cars.....

Normal mode: Performance wise this feels no different than my 2014 running normal key. hate the throttle lag
Sport+ Mode: Feels like my 2014 running Trackey. Perfect throttle response. You touch it you go.
Track Mode: Reminds me ALOT of my 2012 Boss302 running Trackey. Hair trigger throttle response. Too touchy for daily driving IMO

Base GT kinda has driving modes, more like traction settings. If you hold the traction control button for 7-10 seconds it will take off all forms of traction and stability control. Double pressing the traction button when traction control is enabled it will put it in advancedTRAC mode.
