Between getting in a wreck at 75mph and a wreck at 100mph? Either way there is a chance you die at either speed and totally wreck your car. People that attack other people for speeding (in safe conditions) and attempt to say that the speed limit is "safe" are on some kind of delusional drugs.

IMHO speed limits were created because of insurance companies lobbying to the government because of MONEY and not because of safety (they don't want to pay out for deaths and major accidents). Its no different than there being a law that REQUIRES you to wear a seat-belt or a helmet. Do you really need the government to protect you from yourself? You are driving a 3800lb killing machine, that if you hit a person at 10mph, you would probably kill them.

Someone always has to cry and say "Take it to the track, you are breaking the law" because 75 MPH is so much safer than 80 MPH, 85 MPH, 90 MPH....

I agree with you on most everything you say here. The only drawback I see is there are WAY too many people operating automobiles that have no business doing so. I see it every day, and if some laws or restrictions protect me and my family from them, I'm ok with it. I played high school football, I did ok, but I never would have been considered for a quality college team. I think drivers on the American road should be looked at the same way. The laws are way to lenient. Driving today is treated as a RIGHT and not a "PRIVILEGE", like it used to be. I would not let any of my three kids drive, even though the were "approved" through Ca DMV, until I was satisfied with their on road skills. With that being said, I'll sit and read the flames this thread receives....lol :lol:

Driving tests aren't near tough enough. When I learned to drive I took drivers ED and got my license through that. My drivers ED consisted of driving all over north Florida with my instructor sitting in the seat next to me for weeks. If he didn't think you were safe enough to be driving next to his family on the street, you didn't get your license. This was almost 20 years ago, not sure how they do things now a days.

If this thread is flamed, I would love the flamer to explain how 75mph on the highway is safer than 80mph, without saying "because the government says so."

Although there are several in depth reasons that increased velocity nets more risk of a fatality, here is one I think is simple that people could understand.
When you're sitting on a side street waiting to pull out into traffic (especially a left turn where you don't have any right of way). Drivers typically look left and right, judge the distance of approaching vehicles and what their own mind perceives those vehicles speeds are and then pulls out.
When vehicles are traveling at much greater speeds than their minds expect, it does not compute until it's too late.
Emergency vehicles were equipped a while ago with "wig wag" headlights. They actually simulate a "running fast" effect. Like the legs of a sprinter approaching. If you glance at an oncoming emergency vehicle with wig wags on, the lights and pattern grab your attention and your mind tells you, that car is hauling ass.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not making fun of your opinion whatsoever! I would LOVE to see an Autobaun type system in the U.S., but only properly trained and licensed drivers be allowed to use it. Speed kills in the hands of those who don't understand it, weather it be 10mph, or 100mph.

I personally wouldn't do these kinds of speeds where there is traffic lights and things of that nature. These speeds should be limited to the highway.

This is kind of a good point however it doesn't really apply to highway driving which is more of the focus of this thread. Most places where you would be driving 75mph you would not have direct cross streets.

No! Of course not... But the feet per second distance traveled and reactionary times will be effected pre impact. 75 gives a half second longer for someone to think, mayyyybe I shouldn't pull out. And the driver of the other vehicle more braking time and distance.... 1 second of hard braking pre impact could mean death or wheelchair for a year.

Highways, or restricted access roads are better engineered for these speeds for sure. But you're at the mercy of less experienced travelers on the same road, tire blowouts and road debri.
How often, even in the middle of nowhere, with no one else around when you get on it like you stole it and reach 145mph, ....did....you ...check...alllll your tires before hand closely for a huge nail sticking out of it?
