thanks for all the feedback you guys! ive never heard of floating/sucking valves or whatever haha but I don't judge. If one of you kind gentlemen would like to donate your stock exhaust it would be greatly appreciated lol, if not ill take the risk and run straight headers until I get the catback. I understand itll be loud that isn't my issue.

you can't run open headers until you get your catback. just don't. loud exhaust is different from open headers. i doubt you'll make it through one day.

it has an engine!
Lack of back pressure will not cause valve float. Valve float is caused by a valve spring not being able to keep up with the cam lobe. If a lack of back pressure can overpower the spring pressure, you need to replace the worn out valve springs.

Anyone who thinks "back pressure" is a good thing in an exhaust system needs their head checked. Back pressure is bad you want a scavaging effect for maximum flow. This means that the exhaust flowing in the system helps pull out the gas in the next cyl to start the exhaust stroke. This also assists in filling the cyl when it enters its intake stroke. It helps by pulling the fresh air charge, during the cam overlap phase. (I.e. Both intake and exhaust valves open at the same time)

A set of open headers will not hurt an exhaust valve. It will not assist in valve float, it will have no effect on it one way or the other. The car may or may not loose power (due to tuning or lack of) it will be really loud, and will probably cause your fillings in your teeth to come loose from all the noise. But it's not going do a thing to an exhaust valve.
Agreed. Ive ran many open header exhaust. Im contemplating have arh make an axle back muffler free portion for when i dont feel like using their pure thunder portion with their full exhaust

Omg the amount of bad information on the old interwebz cracks me up sometimes. Where do people get this shit from??? Floating a valve because of lack of exhaust back pressure...lmfao:lol:

OP, order a catback exhaust NOW! You're gonna hate life with open headers.

That thing looks like fun. Nice car. What is it running in the 1/4?
its a 327ci 1968 chevy motor with 1968 heads, naturally aspirated, low compression, under a set of rules....in other words, it makes less power than my corvette, lol.

it runs high 9s in the low 130s. its built for a specific class.

It's a sweet car no matter the rules. High 9's is more than respectable. I would be proud of it.

Lol @ sucking a valve. The things people come up with sometimes...........
LoL ... exactly, it's some old wives tale. Do people think all those top fuel funny cars "drop valves" every time they run down the strip because they have open tube headers that are only 2 feet long?

Now if you ran the engine super hard with no headers or exhaust manifold on the heads at all, then it might warp a valve when the engine was shut down (cooling from an open port). But running open headers isn't going to hurt the valves.

Wait a minute, I thought the way it works is one valve sucks and the other one blows? And as long as you don't cross them up all is fine.:hitcomputer:

Jeez, some of these replies

OP, there are absolutely no cons to running open headers.

1. Hearing is way over rated and you can always get hearing aids if you decide you want better hearing.

2. Any cancers you my risk from running without cats could take years or longer to kill you and cancer will probably be cured by then.

3. Finally, who cares about the environment or ozone (if that's even real )? You will be dead before pollutants make this world comepletely unihabitable, so live it up while you can. And if you have kids/grandkids, I'm sure a spaceship will transport them and future generations to a new world before this one becomes a cesspool :headbang:

Idk if it’s gonna load but here is my car with or. Headers only because my exhaust broke into at the x pipe and hit the pavement. And to have someone bring a jack and 13 or 14 mm to drop the hangers and pull it out and unfortunately I’m broke so neighbors or just gonna have to love me.
