Hi all,

I've been reading all the various topics on typewriter tick / BBQ tick etc, and while my car has the infamous 2k tick permanently there, it also has another issue for the past year.

Once fully warmed up (20+ minutes) the engine is knocking / pinging when changing gears, especially 2nd gear on throttle. It lasts for a second or so.

It is 100% knocking / pinging sound. My dealership can't get me in until end of October to assess, so I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

It is a PP1 manual with no engine mods. I run standard Australian fuel of either 95 RON or 98 RON.

Interested in people who have also had this issue and what was causing it.

It is definitely engine knocking / pinging NOT cold ticks or typewriters like most of the other threads I have been reading talk about.

Thank you

EDIT: I managed to get hold of the top Ford tech at my near by Ford centre and he advised that he has seen a few manuals with this issue but not enough for Ford to issue a new software remap update for.

He explained that it is more common in the manuals as they rely more on driver input for the driving sequence vs autos which are more controlled by the software.

He suggested adding a carbon clean product into my fuel tank and seeing if that helps otherwise there is nothing that can be done to stop it as Ford does not consider engine knock / ping to be that serious of an issue.

I have a 2020 PP2 and had the same typewriter/BBQ tick issue. It happened after my 1st oil change. The dealer couldn’t help. Called Ford, they told me that the vehicle is fine and will not affect the vehicle performance. But this was annoying listen to this noise in traffic, drive through etc. A friend of mine was part of Mustang forum suggested that I use a different oil filter will fix the TYPEWRITER issue. Indeed, the problem has been fixed as long as I make sure this oil filter is used. At the dealer, I just pay for the oil change excluding the filter charge. I bring my own. Filter type: PUROLATOR, part# PBL22500. Never hear tick anymore. Try that.

Thanks for the reply but if you read what I wrote I do NOT have the type writer tick. There's already a thousand threads on that issue.

Cheers

Does adding octane booster help? Boostane or Torco.

Haven't tried that yet as 98 octane is already pretty high and don't want to be tied to having to buy octane booster with every tank of gas 😔

The reason I ask, is to determine if this is really an octane issue, or a mechanical problem.

Add some octane booster just to see if the knock goes away.

Also, switch fuel stations/brands if you always fill up at the same place. Could just be bad fuel as well

Good point. However we know that it is 100% a knocking issue, as also confirmed by the head Ford tech. However, I will try this out of curiosity anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion.
