Hey guys, I went to swap out my chrome front pony for a black factory style one today and noticed I have a giant “shutter” type system in front of the radiator that I wasn’t seeing on the how to videos.

My question for you is, is there an easy way to get to the back side of the pony? Or will I need to remove the whole bumper?

Thanks!

If you don’t care to keep the original one you can actually drill through it from the front to pry it off.

I don’t care to keep it, but the new emblem uses the same factory retaining clips to hold it on. No tape, so I’ll need to have access in order to secure the new one unfortunately.

Many folks who bought aftermarket ponies (no pins) just use tape. The retaining clips are a pain in the ass.

I appreciate the input guys. I really would prefer to use the pins so I guess I’m taking off my bumper. Way she goes I guess.

Just curious, have you considered the risk involved taking off your bumper? Is it worth the hassle for an emblem?

I am pretty mechanically savvy. Should be no issues I can foresee. To me, yes it’s worth it to not use tape. I really don’t like chrome but the car was a steal and I wasn’t going to turn it down over a little chrome I can swap out.

No risk pulling the bumper they come off in 10 minutes. 15 if you have never done it.

Best bet is to remove the front bumper. It really doesn't take long. Be careful pushing the retainers on the new emblem. Use a small socket or nut driver to help.

I did it with the grill out.

Dead easy to reuse the original lock washers, or swap them out to stainless :

If I recall correctly, the OE badges are recessed on the back which might make tape application a bit more tricky.

I just did mine...

Remove the radiator shroud cover, then carefully remove the plastic cover by the hood latch. There are 2 main plastic pins that are horizontal and little clips that are vertical. I popped out the vertical ones then pulled the 2 main ones and carefully pushed it down and out of the way. It will move around a bit, just be carful and patient. After that is out of the way, you can get your hand in there...wear gloves as the plastic is sharp...my wife said no means no when I was done! lol

The pony's clips are held in by a metal retainer...get a small screwdriver and pry it off...you will most likely break the plastic holding the pony...no worries. Luckily the OEM pony doesn't have adhesive (The damn 5.0 badges are a nightmare). Once all clips are removed, it just comes right out. Put the new one in and use the similar style clips on the posts.

Put everything back together and done! Good luck!

appreciate the detailed breakdown. I’m going to be doing the whole car this weekend. Adhesive badges always suck to remove.

Makes a world of difference with the all black look. Looks good man.

for the life of me I couldn’t figure out which clips you were referring to for the “vertical” ones. So I did the rear GT and the 5.0 badges then washed the car today. Going to just take the bumper off tomorrow for the horse emblem.

The top plastic cover..take that off. Then there's another plastic tray thing...you need to move that out of the way. It has 2 posts that clip on the back and 4 smaller ones from the bottom. I've also seen people remove the radiator brackets and push that back to allow access. Just google some videos.
