I hate to poop on a perfectly good parade but automotive stuff isn't built on the 7/5 nm nodes that everybody is talking about ramping production for with Samsung/TSMC in AZ and TX. Does your APIM cost as much as an Iphone? It is built on the equipment used to build yesterdays high tech for much cheaper. That's why there isn't going to be any ramp up in production and everybody has to get it when they get to making it. The production lines to make it already exist and it isn't profitable enough to go back and make more production capacity for chips that are already produced to defray the capital expenditure of yesterdays productions.

I had a shoebox of RAM at some point. I think it was all DDR2, so I gave it away a while back.
I have a shoebox of sd ram and ddr1, I'm an IT guy so I have to keep these things in case I run across a system or a POS that uses them. So if ford needs anything, hard drives, wifi cards cables, I can hook them up :D

The F-150 outsells the Mustang by a 10-1 ratio. The little bit of chips they would save by not producing the remaining model year will not make or break the F-150 production.

Same here. I try to keep my on-hand parts relatively recent. If someone needs help with an old system, I'd rather just give them something newer.

It’s not that difficult to understand. The f150 is more profitable than the mustang. Therefore they are going to build 11 f150’s and 0 mustangs IF they only have chips for 11 vehicles.

And as mentioned earlier by Snoopy the GT500 because they make a shit load of profit on those charging 100k for those cars.

I hear you. I feel very fortunate to have had my car delivered right before all of this started. I sympathize with all the guys with cars on order that are getting the short end of the stick in all of this through no fault of their own. Hopefully Ford finds a way to keep the mustang line going through the 21 model year and avoids any more closures

What exactly is the root cause of the chip shortages? Is it just getting things back ramped up post Covid, or something else?

I mean yeah it would suck to wait around for your gt500, but if this rumor is true it would suck even more to be out of work for half a year. I feel for the employees if true.

Condensed version:
1. Covid shutdowns/slowdowns
2. Auto industry cut back on their chip orders at the start of the pandemic (forecasting poor sales)
3. Everyone and their grandmother going remote/streaming/zoom/WfH (lots of increased demand in devices and hardware that need chips)
4. Increased capacity costs billions and takes 18+ months to spin up
5. Long drought conditions in Taiwan (further straining the ability to make chips)
6. Auto industry tries to order chips, but are waiting in line now because they are low man on the totem pole
