I would make sure it opens with the trunk release button by the steering wheel, and your app too. That way, you can narrow it down to the button, or the proximity sensor not picking up your fob.

I have a 16, and the button does work with the car locked as long as the fob is in my pocket. I always do a quick detail before meets, and I go straight to the trunk and it pops open. It doesn't when it's running. I put the trash bags in the trunk to drop in the dumpster on the way out and toss the fob in the cupholder. If I hop out with the car running (in park, lol) it won't open (nor will passenger door) unless I hit the button on the dash, or have the fob. There may be an setting in your options menu to change it. I set only my drivers' door to unlock automatically because I work nights and the car is in a big empty parking structure.

i was driving around 20 yesterday and accidentally hit the trunk release button when trying to access my sunglasses drawer. Trunk popped all the way open while driving. (I have Steeda trunk struts.. .weaker version).

LOL, I thought I was the only one that did that! Yeah, that dashboard button always works even when you don't want it to.

I got my new 2020 today, March build, and have the same issue as the op. Inside button works, remote works, proximity does not. The manual says that it should.

lol I did the same thing yesterday, but mine didn't pop open. I have the OEM 350 Track Spoiler and I haven't received my Steeda trunk pop struts yet.

I can open my trunk with the button by license plate with key in pocket without unlocking doors first. I've loaded the trunk and had to wait for the drivers door to sense my hand grip before I could open the drivers door every single time.

I hope this is not a new thing.

My month-old 2020's license plate button also won't open the trunk even if the FOB is in my pocket unless the doors are unlocked.

Uhh... The manual says, "You need to have your vehicle unlocked or have an intelligent access key within 3 ft (1 m) of the luggage compartment." My key is definitely within 3 feet and it still doesn't work.

Snark much?

If you have two keys, try with the other (if you haven't already), and see what happens.
Maybe the issue is merely with one key...

I suspect it's a software bug when Ford changed something for MY2020 near the end of production (before RONA came to town). My car was built 10/19 and the trunk button works like it's supposed to.
