Did you watch the "Making the Mustang Mach-E" video? No where in there did they admit that this is what the mustang needs to be to survive. They admitted they had a compliance boring SUV and some executive had the bright idea of making it a mustang. Why they decided to stick with the SUV layout is beyond me. Again, should have made a 2 door coupe EV and they could have even announced plans for the CUV if this whole "brand" thing is a requirement. At least then they showed a commitment to the classic layout and had a true mustang before destroying it with a CUV that oh by the way, only 50k units can be made per year for the foreseeable future... The Mach E would have been FAR better as a 2 door coupe. At least then maybe it would have decent performance numbers since it would have a smaller size and weight.
Yes i did watch it. and as i stated earlier to Twin Turbo when he said something along the lines of "Notice how Pericak said Another Pony to the stable", He called it a new pony to the stable instead of calling it a mustang because it's true. That's all it is, It's not a replacement, it's a new type of pony. We have had the same pony in the stable for 55 years and eventually... without introducing a "Female" pony... The pony would die... As hard as it is to admit, this is what the Mustang needs to survive in the future as the 2 door coupe that we all love. You're right that they didn't directly say that it's needed for the Mustang's survival, However no manufacturer will openly admit that it's only adding a certain vehicle under a nameplate due to the nameplate being at risk of extinction. Seriously open your eyes and ears and look beyond whats just infront of you.

Finally someone who sees the bigger picture here on these forums!!
Exactly which bigger picture? Short term or long?

Ford is obviously more concerned about the Mach e's short term success than it is in the ponycar's long-term situation.

Exactly. Whose "long term" vision? Some Millennials MIGHT gravitate to this car, but they usually don't like to spend a lot of money, if they even do buy a new car at all. The top three car models most owned by Millennials are Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Honda Civic, ironically, all sedans. The Mach-E firmly falls into the older lady demographic as far as design and price point. How long will grandma's continue to buy CUV's? Just look at who is driving the Honda CRV's, RAV4, other CUV's, etc. the next time you hop in your car.

Both, they are interconnected. The success of using the Mustang name on vehicles other than our 2 door coupe could very well determine how long the name exists. It's a tradeoff I'm willing to make.

Vision is something in very short supply in this thread. The Mach-E is a 1st gen. vehicle. Yes maybe this one is geared to those who can afford a $50K-70K second automobile. But what about Gen 2, 3, & 4. How do we know that one of these will not be a sedan, or a minivan, or a pickup truck.
Right now we really do not know anything. The first Mach-E's are not going to be in customers hands until late 2020. This thread is going to be a thousand pages by then. Hopefully we will know more about the future of our Mustang.

It is Neither. It is a pony in the stable, basically mustang is becoming a secondary brand.
You are correct in saying it is neither but I think Eric427 was kidding. That said this whole thing is about Mustang becoming a brand and not just a model. Gen 7 will be the S650. The Mach-E is gen. 1 or 1.0.

So in this scenario, is the Mustang name going to just replace Ford as a brand or are we just going to rotate the Mustang name around to the popular vehicle flavor of the week?

Mach-E is 1st gen. Model 3 is 3rd gen. (not including the roadster). Not comparable at this time. Apples to apples you have to compare to the "S". Again, forget the 50K. It doesn't mean anything right now. Concentrate on the 85K as it too is inconsequential. Look what happened to the Focus and Fusion, cars that sold way more than the Mustang. Icons have been killed before. Our mustang is not forever.
Unless you're counting the various F-series trucks, Ford has no other icon to lose or sacrifice.

Historically, Ford has a terrible record as far as cars with iconic potential are concerned. Occasional flashes in the pan with the Mangusta, Pantera, GT and GT40. Toes-in-the-water-only efforts with the Probe GT, Taurus SHO, and recent Foci.

Nope Ford is the manufacturer and a brand name. Mustang if they decide to make it a brand would stand alongside Lincoln. The S550/650/750 would continue as a model under the brand. And yes it would be used to name the "popular vehicle flavor of the week". That's kind of the point of having a brand.

And kind of the entire point why the people who are upset, are upset by it. By the very definition of making it a brand with a flavor of the week instead of just a model, it dilutes the name and history of Mustang. Ford already has 2 brands, Ford and Lincoln. You might disagree with these people, but surely you can see their point?

I have a feeling the Mustang name will end up being a sub-brand of Ford like RAM is for Dodge. The Mustang name will live on... but the spirit of what a Mustang was/still is will die out. The Mustang will go the same way the Chevy Blazer and Jeep Cherokee did... Mutilated until you can't figure out what it is without the name slapped on there. Sad, but true.

look at hte ford Escape.

Damn if that doesn't look nearly identical to the 'Mach-E' doesn't it... Just squashed a little into a more 'car-like' shape and height.
Mustang, my ass.
No it doesn't
