Is there a difference in the leather seats on a 400A car vs a 401A car? I can see the 401A has the extra stitching to look better, but I've read others say the 401A is noticeably softer, thicker, and better bolstered.

From the pictures I've seen, the cushions also seem to have a different pattern on them, so maybe they are different? Ford doesn't really say, they only mention the extra stitching.

I ask because I am torn between two cars, both are 401A, but one has Recaros and other has leather plus B&O audio, can't deicide. The leather seats in my 2016 ecoboost premium I didn't like much, but if the 401A ones are actually better, I'd consider them to save some money over Recaros.

401A leather is better. IMO, skip the recaros, unless you’re going to track the car frequently.

One of the things I wish I would’ve known prior to my buying. I would’ve gone 401A just for that. Not that I have a problem with my 400A’s seats but still.

Is this something new for the 18+ cars? I didn't remember 400 vs 401A having different leather when I bought my car.

I agree on skip the recaros, save 1500 bucks (prob more now), I prefer the heated/cooled seats.

Someone did a detailed write up of the difference, i remember reading it. I agree that unless you are going to track the car regularly, the power, memory, heated/cooled seats are likely to hold more appeal on a regular basis. Don't forget 401 gets you the digital dash as well as the higher trim leather.

I have back issues and found 401a better than 400 on test drive..weird though.memory seats don't include back vertical settings, just seat.

I changed my cloth to the 2019 401a take offs last weekend. They are a direct swap without any additional padding or bolstering that I saw. The leather is better quality and the fronts have a pattern in the perforated surface. It does appear the stitching is better as well.

I agree with everyone that has responded. Go with the 401a leather seats and the B&O audio system. The heated/cool seats and memory function are much better for every day use. Will have a bigger customer base when time to sell.

I guess I need to find a car with 401A without Recaros at a local dealer and compare them to my 16 ecoboost leather seats. Why couldn't ford put heat/cool on the Recaro's like GM and the Camaro :( :( :(

I would have gotten the better leather if I had the choice, once I found the car that was 95% of what I wanted, I drove from Columbus, Oh to Baltimore to get it. extremely happy with it too! One little nit I have with the better leather (maybe I am rationalizing because I couldn't get it), and I am pretty particular, but, if you get the premium leather (with the "staggered stripes effect"), it is only on the front seats, and then the back seats don't match. I looked at a lot of cars, and this would have bugged me.

Before 2018 the better leather was part of an option package called Premier Trim. In early 2016 it was $395 MSRP.

This.
It’s supposedly half-grain leather in the 400a and full-grain in 401a

I love my Recaros. I get why some folks prefer power, heat, and cooling, but the Recaros fit me like a glove. The regular leather seats felt too slippery and not supportive enough even for mild back road fun.

Not sure why Ford doesn't see fit to provide heat and power in Recaros in the Mustang when they do in the Focus ST. Or rather, did.

Wish my salesman had told me this - I would have happily paid the extra for the better leather

401a is worth it just for the padded and stitched center console and dash imo.
