I’m running the stage 2 Whipple tune (‘15) and it keeps cutting out around 4500rpm when accelerating hard. It stalls til I back off and then picks back up. It usually isn’t throwing codes when it does this.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Checks codes, must have stored codes from this. Also check plug gap, very common they get installed without being gapped. Gap to .028

Not sure what that is. This was installed at dealership as stage 1 and upgraded to stage 2 by me.

If you upgraded the throttle body and injectors the tune has to be adjusted accordingly.

You installed the larger throttle body and injectors, so you must have had it calibrated or updated by Whipple for that. Don't think it would run without or at least not well.

The tune was updated when I went to stage 2. I'll look into gapping the injectors and check the codes.

Good. Checking the plugs like Shawn says is a great place to start. Gap of .028 is important. Larger gaps can and will cause spark blow out.

I think he meant gapping the spark plugs.

Spark plugs do not come pregapped.

My dealer made the mistake of not gapping them at install and car ran fine for first 6,000 miles, allbeit with piss poor gas mileage.

I started to get misfire codes in upper RPMs and took it back to the dealer. Gap was 0.044 or 0.048.

We put a new set of plugs in gapped to 0.028, ditched the cats and car drives way better with almost double the fuel economy in city driving.

Update:

I did the crank relearn with the flight control software. The directions said to blip the throttle to 4k rpms until the MIL turns off. Not sure what MIL is, but I blipped it a few times to be safe. The software seemed to think the relearn was complete.
I checked the plugs and they were gapped at .05+ so I corrected it to .028 (same plugs not new)

The car runs great now - no breaking up at 4k RPM, however it is still triggering general misfire codes.

One other thing to mention; all of these problems started when I moved from Denver (high alt) to San Diego (sea level)

Any suggestions on what else to try?

Thanks,
Daniel

I’d be checking your cats at this point. If the plug gap was large, you’ve likely been dumping quantities of unburnt fuel into them.
General misfire is common with bad cats.

I'll check the cats next...

...but there is another odd symptom...

If I park the car facing up on an incline overnight. In the morning, the car sputters for a while (5-10 seconds) before picking up and driving normally.

Thanks again!!
