So with the discontinuation of one the very best dual purpose tires (DD/occasional track day& autox tire), for those that have driven on the RE11...what do you think of the new MPS4S?

Of tires that have the same level of grip as the RE11 and longevity, the Michelin’s seem like the only real comparable tire.

My concerns with the Michelin’s remain the same as the MPSS’, chunking due to the widely spaced tread design, a con the RE11’s don’t share. Probably less of a concern on track vs autox but as I will for sure see some autocross I would rather not kill my tires too early.

I’m not a bad driver but definitely not the best either. I Adapt very well to repeated runs, as I learn almost entirely on experience, not very good at envisioning a run and then applying that vision to the run. So I can be quite susceptible to overdriving the front tires.

I got over 20k miles on my RE11s on my 285/35/19 square set up. They are not quite bald yet but getting close....I have also never rotated my tires, but surprisingly enough the wear is even on all four corners haha  apparently I drive the front just as hard as the rear.

So discussion on a suitable supp for the RE11s?

New MP4S are great for a few or three laps, but then overheat and loose a lot of grip. Might be less of an issue for older tires with shorter tread blocks (which should build heat more slowly). I’ve only run a few laps hard on the Track as the MP4S is my daily tire but no chunks so far. Overheated, they remained very driveable and didn’t do anything surprising or abrupt, just didn’t hold the same level of grip they had in their first laps.

The MPSS that I’ve seen chunk were mostly newer tires on heavy cars with inadequate camber. Hopefully they’ve fixed that issue on the 4S but IDK.

I will be looking to pick up a set of RE11s when they start going on clearance, possibly. Very good tire.

Tire rack is already out of them....otherwise I’d get them again. They’ve actually gonna up in price, if I remember correctly a couple years ago they were under 300 a tire...now they are over. That is if you can find them.

Are the PS4's really a direct competitor to the RE-11's? The RE-11 is a 200 treadwear tire and the PS4's are a 300 TW. Wouldn't that make the Michelin better suited for the street and the RE-11 better suited to the track?

Can't really compare that number between manufacturers. I would expect the RE11 to have a slight grip advantage and track durability advantage over the PS4S, but worse wear, though. The PS4S stretches the boundaries of a 300TW/max performance segment tire.

I've currently got a 285/35 square set of PS4S and I'm looking to upgrade to 19x11's and 305's. What would you think the wear difference would be between those two tires in that size?

Mostly street use but 4-8 track days a year. Barber, AMP, NCM, and maybe Road Atlanta.

I would recommend sticking with the PS4S given your use.

Yeah, spoke to a pair of Bridgestone reps at Solo Nats last year and they mentioned stopping the RE11 and introducing a few new tires. None of the new ones sounded like a direct replacement for the niche the RE11 seemed to fill though. Probably something to do with the success of the RE71R in that role.

I hear the RS4 is the one to look to if you need a track tire with grip that will last a bit longer.

I always forget about the Hankook. Good option too, along with the Dunlop ZII or ZIII. Another tire that has surprisingly good performance overall is the Sumitomo HTR ZIIIs.

I think I saw the new Bridgestone in the most recent Tire Rack catalog, but it wasn't on the site yet.

Yea if you have 18s or 20s there are more options for ya...unfortunately even tho many manufacturers offer 19s they’re still a bastard child size

I can’t remember the review but it had the MPSS’ up against the re11 and a bunch of other tires and it actually had very marginally better lap times than the re11. Probably close enough to be within margin of error. I chose the 11s over the Michelin’s last time due to the reasons stated above and people in general liked the track life of the tire a bit better as they handle abuse a bit better. As well as a more predictive and solid feel due to the stiffer sidewalls.

Getting over 20k on the set is fantastic to me, now that I have another DD that kind of mileage will put me at about two years per set of tires.

The Pirelli fronts were completely bald by 20k and had replaced the rears once at around 10k (I was a little more....umm....energetic originally with my first rear wheel drive car :ninja::shrug::cool: )
