Bottom line for me is that if you are unsure then buy nothing. When my old car bit the dust this summer I was supposed to buy a Hyundai Elantra as optics dictated I should not look too prosperous or a boy racer with some cash. Twenty four hours later I bought the V6 Mustang for maybe six grand more and could not be happier. Bottom line is that I already knew what I wanted to get. I got a car I could live with as a DD. When I retire in a couple of years or even now as I’m old enough, I will get my dream car for weekends and keep diving this V6. All my previous cars had a V8 with the last being an old LT1. Driving this Mustang is a revelation after all those under-steering nose heavy cars. I even took preverse delight in being taunted for driving a 6. And: nothing so far. I wanted that BTW as I used to torture V6 guys back in the day and now I want my punishment.

One other thing, and no slight on guys who successfully bought used, but I try not to buy used sports cars unless you know and trust the seller. My first 5.0 was totalled in three months and then sold to some unsuspecting guy who had no idea of its history. So I don’t buy used as a general rule. Now go and buy that F150 truck you really want to buy and I’ll see you there in the forums. :p

If you are buying an AutoX car, get a Miata or BRZ/86.
You realize there are multiple classes in AutoX, correct?

And theoretically if you're looking to be competitive on a National level, you'll look at the class you want to run and see what they competitive cars are in that class. Or you're a Danny Popp/Andy Hollis and try to drag the car you want to be competitive in the class with the prep level you want to do out of your car.

More A+ posting on this forum.

Logical because I was considering the same thing. I'm a Ford a guy but you can't overlook what you get for $42k. When I was looking 3 months ago, my neighbor couldn't even get me a 1LE for $45k.

There's a "Lightning Lap" video by Edmunds or car and driver on youtube. The 1LE I believe was faster or slower by a mere second or two compared to the GT350. I would've went 1LE and saved myself $20k compared to the GT350.

I don't think he is saying you have to buy a Miata to be competitive. All racing events generally have classes. I used to run autox in college and in Chicagoland post-college (2004-2008). He isn't completely wrong, if you are looking to get the most out of the experience. Big, heavy, high hp cars are a biatch on most common autox courses. I used to do ride-alongs in a friend's modded Z06, and even that was a lot to wrestle. The most fun I had was in old Miatas, an S2000, or a stripped out Jetta. I would never buy a Mustang or a Camaro if my primary hobby was autox.

My thoughts as well, and also, it's probably cheaper and easier on tires, etc., to use those smaller, lighter vehicles.

I don't go on assumptions, I go on what people type. Some people don't want a Miata/BRZ (I've owned a track Miata and still own a BRZ), some people want something faster, more brutal, V8, etc.

Of course consumables are cheaper and last longer on a lighter, lower HP car that uses smaller tires for instance.

But none of that was discussed.

Hell even for HPDE a Miata/BRZ makes a lot more sense. Cheaper on consumables, cheaper to begin with, etc. Most people that do HPDE can't handle stuff like a GT PP2 or 1LE.

That's why I used to get point-bys from those same bros in my little Miata.

If you aren't trying to be nationally competitive at AutoX or Time Trials, it really comes down to what do YOU want to drive to go HAVE FUN. And if you can afford big nasty 335/30/18 Hoosier R7s for HPDE, or A7s for TT, then go for it.

Um, yea, you made a pretty big assumption based on a one line comment. The implication of your comment was that you ASSUMED that I didn't know that there are multiple classes. And yes, exactly what bootlegger and Arthonon stated, I know there are multiple classes, however if your primary interest is in AutoX, go get a Miata or BRZ, preferably used. Swerving through cones is fun, but big high HP cars in courses that rarely exceed 60 mph seems like a waste.

As I posted just above you. Thankfully not everyone is the same. And national level courses can get much faster when they have wide open lots.

Hell, why even do anything other than go karts, amirite?

Before you buy, actually go sit in a Camaro, they suck for seating position and visibility. If you do not mind not being able to actually see the lane next to you, do the Camaro. When we mentioned that I could not see out of the rear window the salesman said, "If you get the seat just right it is ok." Yeah, I walked out of the Chevy dealer as fast as I walked in.

Personally I think the Camaro may have a slight edge on the mustang for appearance. But that all is trumped by the comfort and the visibility and usability of the Mustang. I sat in a Camaro and could not wait to get out. Imagine placing a large box on the floor, and then getting in the box with only slits to see through.

Also I think there is more than one 1LE... 1LE used to be a V8 only option, which more or less started life in the late 80's as a Brake option with some other performance goodies like a performance gear, and a special fuel tank, designed for racing. The 1LE F-body back in the late 80's was the car of choice for the Players series races back in the 80's and early 90's. But now I think you can get the 1LE from the 4cyl up to the V8... So don't be dazzled by the moniker, it is not like it used to be.

Because you can't daily drive a cart (or even drive them to the track).

Crazy and logical don't have to be opposites. You can be crazy and logical just like how you can be crazy and pathological. It isn't crazy to want a Camaro on a Mustang forum. An example of what's crazy is people lifting a truck or Jeep to go to the mall. That's nuts.

I'm not too crazy about the new Camaros looks wise. No doubt they perform well.

I used to love the fbody back when the LS1 first came out, and even the style before that with the LT1. The Trans Am WS6 was one of my favorite cars. I was sad when Pontiac bit the dust.

Same. WS6 is still the only F-body that made me turn my head, still does. Until I see the almost 70's style buttons on the inside. Jesus.

That's why you gut them out and turn them into a racecar.
