I've flashed several different tune revisions from Lund, and have gone back to stock a few times too. At least 3-4 out of the 5 times I've flashed back to stock I've had to perform a crank relearn. I don't think I've ever had to do this after flashing one of lunds tunes.

Does this indicate an issue somewhere? Could the crank sensor be bad and not show any other signs? I do have some odd idle behavior every now and then but it's pretty subtle. I guess I'm just curious to see if this is normal for flashing tunes (although I don't think it is) and if it might be a sign something is off somewhere?

Only time I have had to do a crank relearn was after I installed a new clutch and flywheel.

Right, that's normal. Which is why I'm wondering why I have to do one with nearly every flash.

I had to do a crank relearn when I flashed my base custom e85 tune from Lund, but only the very first time. I had dropped the trans to swap converters before the tune, but didn’t touch the flex plate so I really shouldnt have had to. Never happened again tho so you might wanna ask your tuner at Lund racing about it...

Lund says it's normal because flashing the pcm resets a lot of factory parameters. But almost everyone else I've ever asked about it says they have never done one.

I'm new to tuning -- I had to do this after flashing FRPP Power Pack 1. I'm pretty sure it's normal -- I did the flash back in June, and haven't had a single problem.

I've flashed many tunes in my car from Bama and Lund. Never once did a crank relearn.

It would be great to get an explanation as to why some people get the crank relearn codes and others don't -- but on the FRPP Power Packs thread, there's some discussion about it -- but many on there are going with the Ford tune to have a certified tech do the work to maintain a portion of the warranty, and don't have firsthand experience as to what actually went on when their FRPP packs went on their cars. I called around various places, not wanting to have a dealer do the work -- I got frustrated with it: I have loads of professional experience flashing all manner of other computers, and spoken to lots of other people about doing the flash, and just did it one night. Let me come back with a link to the discussion on that thread -- may take me a minute.

There are numerous references to the crank relearn on that thread. There are a couple of other options on the main ProCal screen -- at least one option is an "only do if a specific code is thrown" option -- can't remember what it is at the moment.

Apparently in no instance on the FRPP tune thread has anyone had a CEL for anything after performing a crank relearn, or had any other issues, and there are a number of members who've needed to do it.

Why do some guys have to do this regularly and some not at all?

The last ngauge firmware update Lund released allows it to do a crank relearn.
