Just curious if anyone else has purchased a GT350 outside of California and then went on to fail a smog test. I purchased a GT350R (not that the R part matters, at least I don't think it does for smog reasons) out of Georgia and took it in for the CA smog emission test and failed. The tech said it's probably because the car only had 56 miles on it....thanks for telling me before I paid you :(

Anyways, has anyone else been through this. The tech told me to drive at least 300 to 400 miles before my next smog check because the computer/emissions is still working itself out. Any help is much appreciated.

What he was probably saying is that one or more of the OBDII monitors reported "Not Ready". That's an automatic fail because it prevents people from just resetting any failing monitor before going into smog test. Yes, you need to put more and varied miles on them to get them all to have enough data to report success or failure.

See also http://www.obdii.com/drivecycleford.html. Yes it's crazy to do the whole thing verbatim. That's why the response of driving several hundred miles, eventually they'll all be satisfied.

Yup. Went through the same thing, non R, also in the bay. Took it in @ 100miles+, failed. Took it back around 4-500 and it passed. Was able to get a temporary registration when the car first arrived, they gave me 30 days to get the smog test completed.

The tech should have know better, some places check to see if all the monitors are set before doing a test, which isn't going to happen with only 56 miles, if you have any more problems passing just let me know I can help

I did around 130 miles and passed. The tech said it still failed the evap test but that that section wasnt required anyway

The sensors need to have gone through various known periods of throttle and speed in order to self-calibrate.

Seems like it takes ~100 miles or so.

I bought mine in Oklahoma, so I had 1600 miles by the time I got back to CA, and needless to say that was sufficient.

I'm sure everything will check out fine once the car has been driven a bit more.

There is a driving loop(series of steps) you can do to make the most of the sensors go ready. I dont remember where I read it but im sure its on the web.

Yup, I agree with everyone else. I have smog'd both a R and regular GT350 (both with over 1000 miles) and they passed with flying colors.

I just registered my GT350 purchased out of state last week. A forum member had informed me about driving it 100 miles before getting the smog check, and I wondered where that came from because I couldn't find any info at the DMV site about it. Got the smog around 120 miles and the tech informed me - just as others have posted above - that the sensors and computers need to hit certain speeds at certain time intervals, otherwise it will automatically fail.

Very true. My GT350 arrives today from Texas and I'm going to plug in an OBDLink MX device and connect it up to our ALLDATA mobile app which provides basic scan-tool functionality but also has a nice emissions readiness dashboard. I've got a tablet charging in my office right now, so I'll use it to monitor. Once all of them are completed, I'll take it to Smog-N-Go. :)

Did you FAIL or receive a NOT TESTED? Big difference...well at least in most states anyway. A failure means components are actually broken. NOT TESTED testing means monitors are not in ready status or in incomplete cycle status and needs more drivin.

Incomplete means the monitor is on but isn't 100% sure what it's doing yet.

Not Ready means the shizz is turned off like when you get your rear O2 sensors turned off for offroad or high flow catted situations.

Unsupported means the test bypasses that parameter.

At 10 miles, I checked the emissions readiness monitors and came up with this:

When I checked after a few drive cycles and 55 miles on the odometer with one single 36 mile drive, the car was good to go:

I'll be taking it in for it's CA Emissions test tomorrow with about 58 miles on the odometer.

I've been through this countless times both in CA and elsewhere either through an out of state purchase or low mileage transfer and agree the tech always says 100miles from new or after disconnecting battery so all the monitors gets their readings and report normal. Most states allow MFG. to certify emissions on new vehicles delivered to dealers as new so its not an issue of mileage than. An out of state purchase and in some cases dealer to dealer transfer will trigger an emissions test due to title events on the DMV computer. When DMV no longer see a blank for first owner they may think sale and trigger emissions testing.
