I've been watching the comments about this mod and what Gibbo has stated here is a very valid point.

There is a certain price point that all these manufacturer's try to obtain in order to remain competitive. PMAS is an excellent intake in my opinion, but it doesn't mean that there is no room for improvement. I'm sure PMAS would agree.

The problem, however, is that to improve on the already great design would require a whole host of modifications in order to get substantial returns on performance. After investing in research, molds, and the manufacturing process to properly enclose the air box, insure cooler air and maximum flow, I'm sure the price of the intake would more than double - and for what percentage of power gain of say, 16 rwhp? 50%? 75%? The cost for a business does not justify the means in order to stay competitive.

It's always been the home enthusiast who has worked on improving mods in order to gain performance. Hell, where would be today if it wasn't for the Vic Edelbrocks, Holley brothers, and many other examples in this industry.

Stating someone is wrong for trying to improve upon a performance part is simply implying that the part they are trying to improve upon is perfect. We all know that is not true. While we are all glad that there are a host of performance parts available for our car, we need to remember that those providing them are still a business that needs to find a way to make money doing so. And sometimes providing a very good, but still imperfect part, while maintaining a competitive price point, is what it takes to stay in business.

I applaud anyone here who wants to try and make low cost improvements and share their results. Are they scientific? Are they documented? No they are not. But it's up to the reader to evaluate such mods and make that decision on their own.
Well said.:clap2:

I found a thread on another forum (you can find it) where a GT was fitted with a PMAS and picked up mph and dropped time in the 1/4 by a significant margin. YouTube also has a video of a Mustang being dynoed (not by PMAS) and it showed significant gains. I suspect more will be coming out as people find out about it. Guess we will see.

Remember, this tube has more 40% more cross sectional area than stock, it's massive. It isn't just a bigger piece of pipe, but one that has a matched MAF sensor (no tune version).

People tend to get caught up on IATs but what I keep thinking about is "how long does that warm air hang out before it's sucked into the engine?" You have a column of air moving all the time during acceleration, so initially the air is warmer but when you hit the gas or soon after it pulls air from outside and all over (lower IATs soon after the car gets going has been observed by a lot of people) I also believe for the same reason the material of choice for an intake tube is of little consequence. However, it certainly doesn't hurt to drop the temp where you can. I like to tinker as well. What none of us know except for experts is where you begin to see a diminishing return.
Cross section is double stock or damn near. Stock MAF is 84mm ID and Pmas is 120mm ID. Area of a circle is ~ 3.14 X r2. If you do the calculations the Pmas is 1.95 times as large area wise vs stock.

Thanks buddy!

I think people need to understand I am not saying the PMAS is poor or they made an error in their design, not at all I think the PMAS is the best CAI for the S550 on the market for performance and flow, thats why I got one. It is also very well priced at $299, PMAS know the market and they know by hitting such a strong price point on an intake that is proven to flow so well, they will sell truck loads of them.

The PMAS is great it is why I got one, but its not perfect, there is no perfect intake on the market. PMAS do however for sure have the best intake tube being 120mm in size and flowing so well and their choice of filter is excellent, easily the best on the market. The maf tube is also spot on.

For me the weakness is the heatshield but it cost only $299 !!!

They also made the right decision ditching the snorkel because on a stock car re-adding that snorkel will cost you some flow.

That is why I have done it the way I have, everything can be improved upon and though I am not an expert I understand the basics and have rebuilt engines but I am very fortunate to know some extremely talented people, hell my company deals with one of the very top F1 teams so I can discuss and show my ideas to certain individuals who truly know their stuff, if they give my modifications a thumbs up and explain why which I have tried to then explain here I trust them, especially when its numerous different people who do not know each other all saying the same and these people will very quickly tell me if I am being stupid and not to bother wasting my time.

Anything can be improved upon within reason because manufacturers have a budget and MSRP to target. Like I said the perfect CAI for our cars would not be $299, would probably be more like $600-$800 at which point your potential customer reach and sales become far lower. As a manufacturer you always go after the bigger market or design a product to get to market sooner, this is partially evident with PMAS as its now on the third revision due to issues with earlier revisions. :)

Thanks man, I know the formula but must have had a brain fart.

I was intrigued enough to contact a local Mustang shop that does a lot of work, and in their experience PMAS makes a good reliable MAF, which brings me closer. They didn't know about the intake itself. In fact, I don't think I know anyone running it yet.

I don't see a risk involved as long as our computer can compensate to keep A/F acceptable. If it does adjust, how much headroom is left, considering an otherwise stock vehicle?

Another question I have for the same setup: Is power sacrificed at any rpm to compensate for high rpm performance, or will we see gains across the curve?

Edited: I just went back to the 1st page and found that gains are pretty good across the curve. More on top of course but some good midrange too from what I can see.

Is there any concern about water or bugs damaging the filter on this intake?

My car is garaged and won't be driven in the rain when I can help it, but I might take a really long trip once or twice a year where I might have no choice but to drive at freeway speeds in the rain for hours on end, as well as leave the car parked outside overnight.

Something to be worried about or not?

I feel gains everywhere. If you get the no tune required intake you won't have retune for the huge MAF tube. I got the tune required and used Pmas's supplied MAF transfer function in my tune and it runs great and fuel trims are very close to 0.

Hurricane just came through here. No issues to report and we had a lot of rain.

And also plastic tires?
No sir just slightly more than half way worn 305 wide pilot sports. 35 psi

Pmas and flex tune was all the worth it. Made my car feel so much faster. Can't wait to dyno. Way more power down low and up top I can feel it pull more aswell but bottom and midrange is where I really notice.

You said...get sideways going into 4th. Chirping (as you now say)vs. getting sideways is two different things.

I am running e85 with CAI and custom Flexfuel tune with Steeda shifter. Over 423rwhp in 96 degree heat. I have 305's, too. I don't get sideways banging 4th. I can chirp in 4th, however.

No not chirpping I break the tires loose and have to let off because of car start to drift to the left side. I just did it on my way to work and when I got tune aswell. Your tires must be in better shape than mine. Lund flex tune..just fyi

What catback? Seems we have similar mods. I'm running amsoil and have car lowered with some other minor Suspension stuff

Two more questions if anyone has done this yet... how does the filter come off for cleaning? Installation is one thing, but periodic cleaning is another. Should one buy oil from the mfr, or is it a generic product? I have a lot of experience re-oiling K&N filters with their branded kit.

Thanks.
