Hey Fellas -

This thread isn't being opened for bitching or complaining, but rather, to answer a question I have. Please let us not take it over with bitching about limp mode, tech packs, etc.

Does anyone know roughly what temperature the transmission is hitting before it rolls into limp mode? I'll be heading out next week with someone and we will be hooking the car up to some laptops and looking to monitor it real time. We will be looking to recreate the problem that I have hit a couple of times on the hwy.

This is a 'sanctioned' event as well.

Thanks in advance.

Unofficial reports on this forum suggest that 280 F is the threshold; possible 20 degrees or so lower.

Was there a company who said to use their fluid and it would help with the issue?

Maybe BG products?

I think I saw a post from them about there fluid being superior to ATF and would help with heat.

I spoke with a technical resource at Redline Oils today. He basically said not to worry. 280 degrees in a manual transmission shouldn't affect the ATF's service life. He said it sounds like the factory has a safety margin built into limp mode to preserve the lubricant & transmission.

Of note, he said a fluid with higher viscosity would actually run at a higher temperature and bring on limp mode faster. So, avoid the thinking "thicker is better".

Interesting. I'll update everyone next week on how this goes. We are looking to get the car into limp mode. I'll be hwy driving @ 4500-5000 rpm.

I found this online (http://myautomatictransmission.com/temperature-chart.htm) and I know it's for automatic transmissions, I think it has value since the GT350 uses ATF (or DCTF) as lubricant...

I'm interested in your results and I'd like to know the effect of hot ATF on the gears and synchros.

Cheers,

Don
considering these things run at 240-260 readily sans cooler, and 260 plus when spirited one had better plan on fluid swaps every 4th oil change.

I have yet to see my Tech Pack trans go higher than 195 degrees in 5500 miles of all levels of driving. You would need to drive it pretty hard to get to 260.

What are your avg ambient temps, and do you redline at all?

Is there a good way to not only monitor, but record min, avg, max transmission temps throughout the course of the history of engine/car?

I went on a club drive yesterday. It lasted about 30 minutes. The first half saw some pretty decent speeds for a public road, mostly 3rd and 4th gear. After that the road became twistier with lots of hairpins and short straights. Much of the time I was in 2nd in the 5-7000 rpm range. We were also going uphill, starting at 300 ft. and ending up at about 3500 ft. After about 25 minutes my trans temp was exactly 275 and I was anticipating the dreaded limp mode which fortunately never happened. I've driven another road in the same area with longer straights, mostly 3rd and 4th gear and speeds up to 100. I usually run it in both directions which takes about 30 minutes and my trans temp at the end will be around 240.

every time i drive my car, slow, fast, steady speed or variable it ALWAYS goes over 195 degrees. I have yet to see it stay under that.

Just ignore this guy Sir. Every thread on transmission temp, limp mode, etc, he must jump in and tell us all how well his tech pack performs.

He posted into my thread and offered absolutely nothing. Didn't answer my question, didn't offer anything except some version of the same thing he has already said a dozen times.

All of our transmissions go over 195 with the possible exception for when we drive for 10 minutes to get groceries.

I can't figure out if this is a troll or he just forgets he has already told us how well his tech pack performs or if he married Henry Fords great granddaughter.

Dave, if your still using the non ODB2 method of reading temps I really suggest you get a cheap scanner and read what the car actually is seeing.

today was 91, I hit 210-20 getting groceries and a new bike chain, in traffic within proper speed limits.
