MBRP Street Drone?

I picked up a used mbrp street catback and no drone. Honestly it is quieter than I expected. Much tamer than my friend magnaflow system.

Whoa! I have a 15 GT vert and went with the MBRP street. It might suit some with a coupe, but it was horrible for a vert. I ended up with the Magnaflow street system and it was instant happiness. Mines an auto by the way and I'm an OG that likes old school.

I've been looking for a solution to the horrific drone I get at a cruising RPM of 1200 to 2000 in 5th or 6th ever since I installed a Gibson cat-back system. Passengers have said that it wasn't just the church-organ-like noise but that they felt this pressure in their head from it. The car is a convertible and when the top is up you can't stand being in it at 60 ~ 70 mph without the windows being down.
I've looked at the J resonators in the Solo system but am given to understand that both the size of the pipe in the J and the length of it need to be tuned to cancel out the specific drone frequency you are generating in the system. I'm sure you need testing equipment and computer software to figure all that out and I don't know where you would go to get that done. Remember also that the J pipes take the place of your mufflers so you'll have to install something like the Magnaflow X resonator where the factory resonator used to be. And, after all of that, who knows what the car will sound like? Good luck!

Theres a guy local to me that went with the Gibson on his 15. I was glad I got to hear it before I bought anything, I did not like,the Gibson setup at all. The MBRP was a little better but not much. Magnaflow street FTW.

As a minor update, I found someone with a lift and double-checked everything. All connections were tight, and the entire system seemed to have "settled" itself. Though I noticed, when looking at the system from behind, the H-pipe was tilted ever-so-slightly (5° or less of right/left camber).

I loosened all the connections and pushed the H-pipe as far forward as it would go. I also pushed the axle-backs forward. I re-tightened all connections and it seems that the drone was slightly subdued afterwards.

I believe that having the axle-backs at slightly different lengths (less than 1", so it might not be immediately noticeable) may have been causing some of the drone. For those of you reporting drone, it might be worth double-checking all your connections and pushing everything as far forward as possible.

I'm still planning on installing resonators to tame the rasp. I picked up a set of Vibrant 1142 resonators and we'll see what happens. For what it's worth, after about 800mi, the rasp seems to be dying a little. It's still there, but it's not nearly as bad as when the system was new.

I'm going to have to have a shop do the work as I don't have a welder and don't have a way of manipulating pipe.

^My thinking is somewhere in here, since 1142 are the oval resonators and not the bottle style. When my car was up in the air, I dry fit the resonators (just held them up). They're pretty short, so I think there's room.

If I can't find someone to do the work, I may end up going with the bottle style resonators and have them added to the H-pipe. The Vibrant 1795 resonators are 18" but only 4" in diameter. In theory, this means I only need 2" of clearance between the pipes...seems pretty close to that already.

I have this exhaust and I cured it. Cut the POS mufflers and install Magnaflows. If you search I posted the Part #s and paid around $70 a piece for mufflers. Mustang sounds smooth and sweet. Edit: Magnaflow Part# is 12229 got them for $70 a piece shipping included.

Thanks man, I actually just got done reading through that thread and some others. My concern is increased drone with the Magnaflows. I like the way it sounds but honestly drone > rasp. I'd rather be rid of the drone and deal with rasp.

I see there's a 14" (yours) and an 18" for that particular muffler. There's a few people complaining about drone with both. Mostly trucks but it should be the same principle.

I know there's the whole argument of "don't drive at that RPM" but, in my opinion, that is ridiculous.

I have ZERO drone. Promise. These mufflers work. :clap2: I was so disgusted with the MBRP rasp and found the fix. NOW with that said I have cats.

MBRP vs Magnaflow - which is louder?

The MBRP has a pretty nice deep tone before it hits the rasp - is the MF deeper overall?

The mufflers sound like recycled "Green Giant green bean cans" absolutely crap. If you read my thread you saw I could not stand it. So as always I ended up with MagnaFlow mufflers the leader in the industry. It is not loud. If you want your neighbors pissed at ya and your ears bleeding these mufflers are NOT for you. Zero drone, smooth old school V8 sound and ZERO RASP!! Everything about my exhaust rocks.

It is the most ungodly rasp ever. :lol: It downright sucks. Now there is no drone. But damn the rasp is just embarrassing. After I ordered my Magnaflow mufflers I did not drive the car til it was time to install the Magnaflows.

How is your magna flow with the drone ? Im about to buy an exhaust system want to get your feedback and if you had a video that would be awesome !
