Just curious to see what everyone's temps are. The last two months I've been noticing that my oil temp level will sometimes go near the yellow line, then slowly return to middle. I tried changing the oil again even though it was still good, and switched from 5-20w to 5-30w Mobil 1. This also occurs while cruising on the highway - see below:

Have you ever turned the car on and just started Reving the engine? This is a major cause of pre-mature engine wear and very dangerous to do. You should always let the car warm up as well as the oil temp, which takes A LOT longer in the colder months. You car should be under warranty so take it to a dealer and have it checked out.

On all my cars, I usually remote start and let it warm up for 10 minutes before I leave the house. I drive very easy until temps show normal - and it gets pretty warm here where I live. Probably going to take it in soon, just wanted to see if anyone else had something similar and what the remedy was so I can give a heads up to the service advisor

None of the standard s550's have a true oil temp sensor. What you are seeing in that display is an estimated value based on other temp sensors like ambient and cylinder head temp. As long as your other sensors are reading fine with no abnormal behavior then I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks Zack, everything else shows normal, and I too thought the oil temp sensor could just be reading a lot higher than it should but wasn't too sure.

I kept trying to research online my problem, but all the post I came across regarding high oil temperate was related to low oil pressure which is what I don't have.

You warm up the car for 10 minutes, in LA ?

What are the cylinder head temps? That gives you a real number to look

I prefer to start the car, and once the cylinder heads reach 100 degrees then drive smoothly and not go above 3K RPM until I hit normal operating temp for the oil.

Ill check and report back here when I take her for a drive again, but I believe it was running normal temp...which is between 200-220 correct?

and yes in LA, sometimes our early mornings can be cold but even then I still just let her run for 10 minutes before I take off

Starting the engine and letting it idle accelerates wear. The best way to minimize wear is start the car and drive moderately until it is up to temperature.

To the OP the picture you posted shows the oil temp solidly in the green, why are you even questioning it?

How does idling not oil the engine, but driving it does?

I never bought that idling hurts your car myth. Idling coats the engine with oil just fine.

When looking at your screen picture, what is illuminated to the left of PARK? Could this be source of extra engine heat?

Mine is usually in the center, if im going up a long hill on the frwy, and tge temps are over 70, my gauge will go over center a little but not as far as yours shows. Even under heavy driving through canyons mine rarely goes above the middle. Also, i let my oil temps get to normal ranges before i rev much over 3k while driving.
