Just curious to see what everyone's temps are. The last two months I've been noticing that my oil temp level will sometimes go near the yellow line, then slowly return to middle. I tried changing the oil again even though it was still good, and switched from 5-20w to 5-30w Mobil 1. This also occurs while cruising on the highway - see below:

Oil Pressure shows Normal too...
Were did you go to get you oil pressure gauge? All mine shows oil pressure normal on my gauge cluster.

There is no gauge for pressure, just for temp

How does idling not oil the engine, but driving it does?

I never bought that idling hurts your car myth. Idling coats the engine with oil just fine.
It warms up faster by driving. The less time the engine spends in an enriched state, less fuel condenses on cylinder walls washing away oil and less wear occurs.

Starting the engine and letting it idle accelerates wear. The best way to minimize wear is start the car and drive moderately until it is up to temperature.

To the OP the picture you posted shows the oil temp solidly in the green, why are you even questioning it?

Dave
The picture shows an example of the gauge getting close to the yellow mark, that was the whole point of the post - which is why I'm questioning it.

What you're stating in regards in accelerating engine wear - I've heard and was told by numerous people to always let the engine warm up before driving. Not letting the engine warm up before driving moderately could accelerate engine wear due to the oil temps being cold. I'm sure my first few minutes of letting the car warm up before driving isn't hurting anything.

When I start my V6 auto it fast idles at a 1000 RPM's for about 5 min's then drops down to 650 RPM's and the temp gauge start moving, I checked the manual and it stated that this is normal to warm the engine.

Forgot to update, my cylinder head temps are showing around 200-207
cylinder head temps look normal. My car is around 195, but climbs to 205-215 when I slow, and the air flow stops. My oil temp gauge stays just left of center. I suspect your oil temp gauge has an issue, but then there is no numbers, so its not all that useful.

You could try buying an infrared temperature meter, and measuring the engine directly. Verify its the same number as the cylinder head temp. They are fairly cheap. Probably buy one myself before long.

Seems too long

My Cyclone Pony's fast start-up idle is at 1,100 rpm for 1.5 minutes, then drops down to about 700rpm...5 minutes seems a bit excessive to me.

After seeing your picture on the trans temp I pulled my up and been reading it the last couple days. My needle is stright up in the middle and that's 199 degrees in 80 dergees in southeast florida. Looking at your and I know some guys say it's in the green that's well over 200+. I'd have the dealer look at or maybe ask for a filter and fluid change.

Hi USMC V6, I don't know if you noticed or not, but the trans temp and oil temp are two separate gauges. My trans temp is fine, it reads in the middle majority of the time.

On a previous reply on this thread from zackmd1 - he mentioned that the base model s550s don't really have a true oil gauge, it just calculates the temps based on temp sensors like cylinder and etc. All my other temps seem to be fine, its just the oil one that sometimes gets a little close for comfort to the yellow. It still hasn't touched yellow and I already changed both the oil and filter twice within the same month. The only difference on the 2nd oil change was going from 5-20w to 5-30w.

I just recently discovered ET mode or Engineering Test mode, but haven't had a chance to fully check it out. I'm wondering if I could see the actual numbers for temperature reading - then again if its just calculating based on the other sensors, it probably still won't do me any good.

It should be there on the same list you found the trans temp gauge on, or if you're on the trans gauge just cycle through them using the directional arrows on the steering wheel

thats interesting. So chances are my temps are more than likely fine, just my oil temp sensor might be off then?

your gauge in the picture is right of center mine is were your is but only left of center it never got to center of the gauge. You might take it to the dealer and ask them to replace the sensor that you've taked to other mustang owners and there's never goes past center. If you changed oil and it's still there I'd say it's the sensor.
