So just filled up the tank for he 1st time on my new GT. Saw in the owners manual to use 87 octane. Now am seeing on the Ford site that all test data was done using 93 octane. I have 91 or 92 around here, but ended up filling it up with 87. Wondering how many of you daily driver guys are using the higher octane stuff. Would it be better for the engine or break-in period? Can you feel the car being quicker with 93? Never seen any of the 85E stuff that I see you guys talking about on here. Just curious.

I run 87 and DD my Mustang and haven't had any problems. It's stock other than a catback though.

Really comes down to personal preference and your reaction to fear, uncertainty and doubt. The motor ECU will adjust to either, there will be no negative affect from using either. The motor makes slightly less power using 87 than 93, but all information shows that for the GT it is around 1% or 4hp. Some people claim that they can really tell the difference and most others claim that it is all in the mind. Generally I put 91 or 93 in my car just because I am willing to pay it with gas prices so low, but I have put 87 in it as well and have not been able to tell the difference.

The Ecoboost does have a substantial power drop on 87 though, all early indications showed that it was around 10-15%, but that is not you. If you do CAI and tune most of those tunes are optimized for 93 octane so I would stick with that if you tune it.

Hope that helps! Enjoy your new GT!

Maybe we need a thread started on how to use the search function?
