I was messaging with the OP on facebook, and he stated that he uses a heat gun. He can be more precise and controlled with this, however it takes a lot longer to achieve the separation.

He uses butyl adhesive so there should be no issues with sealing.
There are many examples of his work on FB, with completely happy customers

I have just fired him a PM asking about getting a set underway for me, I guess he has the get the LED's in first and may need some cash up front for them, will wait and see what he says. Then to pull the front of the car off to get the lights ...... which I don't mind saying is a bit daunting. I have taken on much bigger jobs in the past, and it is just unbolting a big bit of plastic, but never thought I would be doing this on something so new and pretty.....

Seriously, it looks quite straight forward, not a complicated task at all. The only important thing is to remember to remove the two "hidden" bolts that attach to the guard.

Google and U-tube must have put thousands of guys out of jobs as people go the DIY path after seeing things done online, rather than pay someone with the skills. I agree it doesn't look like a big job, more a psychological thing as with that bar removed the car looks pretty messed up, but I reckon the end result will be worth it. So now to wait for a reply from Woody. As you are only 5 mins away, do me a favour and go knock on his door and ask him to check his messages:lol:

Someone mentioned that they were buying a damaged headlight on Ebay from the USA to experiment on to see how hard they are to disassemble, does anyone remember where that was mentioned? There are more off topic posts in the Aus subsection then there are on topic ones, makes it a pain to find anything. Yes I am guilty of this as well so not throwing any stones at anyone

I was just curious to know how hard it was to split the light open and if you had any dramas getting the permaseal to soften with some heat. I noticed you made a comment about that in another post, but looks like you went a different path and cut the back out.

Now you have actually had your hands on one of these lights what are your thoughts on the idea of heating it up and re-sealing it? Would you go this way or is there a better - safer way to fit these led boards?

Sorry for asking questions that may have already been answered, I am still getting the hang of how to search these forums without getting swamped with a 1000 results to sift through.

Do you have any photos you could share showing:
the lit DRL's from the front
where you cut to insert the kit into the headlights
the size of the opening needed to insert the DRL's?
How you attached them and what you used to seal the back of the lights
I think you're the first owner to achieve this in Australia so congratulations.

Just been looking into this a bit more now that I have decided to do these.
It seems that the Diode Dynamics boards used in the US were only designed as a cosmetic thing and never meant to be bright enough to be a DRL. They are now working on a brighter version for the export market. Caniggia the Polish guy seems to add additional leds to the DD boards to make them brighter on his ones. I have no idea how bright DRLs need to be here, but this maybe an unforseen issue. The ones I have seen on the LHD cars here looked OK but if they are bright enough to be used as DRLs legally is a new question to be answered.

More research required I think.

I can take photos to give you an idea what it looks like and where to cut. I got lucky and cut almost perfectly on the first go.

My problem with trying to break open the permseal with heat is that the melting point for permaseal is higher than the plastic, so it's actually the plastic of the enclosure that you end up softening to make it come apart which could cause distortion, or you may end up cracking the clear lens which will make re-sealing cleanly really difficult.

I don't care about them being functionally bright enough to drive with - that's what headlights are for - they are just cosmetic to me. I had actually read the DD kit was brighter than the stock LEDs, so was worried the tribar effect might be lessened as they blur together from a distance.

No car yet so I can't show them working.

I don't want to hijack this thread for BoostDesigns so i'll post a separate thread sometime on the weekend with some pics.

I seem to have everything BUT the car! The longer it takes the more crap i order to pass the time.

if you want the DD kit, fyi it took about 2 weeks to build before they shipped it (i think they build to order?), then another week to get here so you may have a bit of a wait even after you figure out what you're gonna do.

The 3 led bars next to the headlight are missing in our cars. To get them working means opening up the headlight and fitting the led boards.
