Thanks guys, the car will be used as a cruiser, so although we are used to the BMW gearboxes, the car is going to be used in a different way to just a daily driver, so I think the 6AT may be fine. I drove a previous generation Mustang in the States 6 or 7 years ago and it seemed fine. Maybe driving a US car in the US you expect the transmission to be a bit slushy, dunno if it would loose it's appeal on UK roads.

I'm aiming to test drive one at the weekend and see what it's like.

Thats the only way to see if the glove fits...

These cars provoke interest from people with very different expectations.

if you’re just after a cruiser with no intention of going drag racing or using it for track days, I honestly think you will be happy with an older car in factory spec.
That’s not to say facelift cars don’t offer benefits, but the old adage of “How fast do you want to go and how much do you want to pay” still rings very true today.
IMO all Mustangs offer amazing bang for the buck and make a surprisingly sensible choice considering the low depreciation and parts costs.

Of course the big difference with a Mustang to most cars is the passion owners have for their car, and that’s when people start personalising and improving their ride.

And this is where one guys heaven is another’s hell. I get that a rorty exhaust sounds great revving at the traffic lights, but personally I couldn’t live with it droning on the motorway every day. Likewise stiffening up the already stiff suspension on disintegrating British roads would drive me nuts. But these are the 1st mods a lot of owners do as they want more performance.
So think about what YOU want from a car. Try to drive a few, and do some homework so you know what you’re buying.

Let us know how you get on

I didn’t like the 10 speed. Could never chose the right gear for me, for example you’d be going up a hill and it click into forth. A bit dim witted compared with the typical German offerings. Does the 2018 have the MT82 6 speed manual? If so, avoid at all costs.

2018 facelift mustangs have the mt82-D4 manual 6 speed. Apparently a fair few changes to the original mt82 found in pre facelifts.

Never really understood this. I never find it a problem and most of the time just let it get on with it. It doesn't really matter what gear is is in does it as long as it works ??? 4th is a pretty low gear anyway when you have 10 ! It frequently doesn't go below 3rd unless you completely stop.

Mustang GT Manual 2017 - now sold ☹
for the extra costs of the road tax or whatever it's called now and the ratios of the MT6, i'd be tempted to get the A10 if you can stick into manual mode and drive it with the paddles. If you really want a manual, look into a 17 plate and have the low tax rate. My 2p worth

Personally the saving in tax is irrelevant in comparison to getting what you actually want. 'For me' the improvements made to face-lift GTs far outweighs saving a few hundred quid or whatever it is extra in VED. Each to their own though.

The 10 speed auto in manual mode suffers lag, again it depends what your accustomed to but in comparison to a BMW 7 speed DCT it really is noticeable. I should know as when I test drove the GT auto I had driven to the dealer in my DCT m2 . The AT10 was best left in auto mode imo. Decent box but not particularly ground breaking again imo.

just try a VAG dual clutch with seven cogs, Ford box is quite agricultural by comparison

I've driven many DCT type boxes as well as torque converters and I still believe there are pros and cons to both. You didn't mention the awful problem with VAG DCT's that when you brake up to a roundabout and then want to set off quickly you have to wait until it is ready (because of the brake switch link to the box)by which time the gap has gone. Or the Powershift shunt when stopping.

One of many threads on forums moaning about them ..
