The octane learning and ffv are switched off. There is potential, then, to add some borderline spark timing since the tables are set up for 87. This doesn’t actually gain you any more peak timing or power, but it gets you more torque initially after going wot since you don’t have to wait as long for knock advance to come in.

Op cam angles are drastically different. Home/deenergized position isn’t at the same location for the intake cam, but even if you account for that it’s very different. For instance, the gen2 moves the intake cam 38 deg through the rpm range, gen3 is 44 deg. Gen4(?) only moves it 24 deg.

Pe lambda is basically the same.
Sounds like the Gen 4 probably drives really nice out of the box with a lot of the slack zones taken up already.

Also, I've always wondered why Ford doesn't use the octane learning on this platform. I guess they just don't think it's necessary? Only the Ecoboosts seem to make use of it.

I’ve thought about this a bit myself.

In the gen 3, the way the spark is set up is to be in per-cyl up to 5080 rpm and then switch to a global of sorts. So the timing starts low, knock advance brings in more, and at high rpm all it takes is one knock event and all cylinders are reduced. At wot on a stock car you might see one or two knock events per pull. My guess is that ford determined the engine could withstand one or two knocks per wot.

The ecoboost is a different animal. It actually uses the learned octane to modulate boost. So if it learns higher octane it will make more boost as well. One cool feature of the stock ecoboost and gen3 is the stock pcm can modulate boost/load with learned octane, ethanol content, and other things.
