Winter Preparations?

Hello Guys! I just purchased a 2016 Ecoboost Mustang with the premium and performance trim. I live in NY and the winter weather can get quite brutal here. And my car came with summer tires. I think that obviously wouldn't work in NY winter weathers.

I really like the rims that came with the car. I'm wondering if I should just change the tires to all weather tires. Would that work in the snow? What are the recommended all weather tires for this car?

I'm very new to cars and this is my first rear wheel drive car. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have thought about getting a set of winter tires as well. But that would mean I have to change to summer tires then winter tires every year. Wouldn't that be really bad for the rims?

You can find a set of cheap 18" wheels. Most people do that anyway...it's a one time cost rather than swapping tires on the wheels.

I wouldn't even contemplate an A/S tire on this car, not in NY winters. You'll want a true and dedicated winter tire for this car, I used the Xi3 last winter and was extremely pleased with those.

GT PP. What are the smallest wheels that I can fit over the PP calipers. Ideally 18x8 for winter tires.

I don't think you'll be finding 18x8's that fit over the GT PP brakes.

This is what I plan on doing, just as an example.

Getting a summer set of wheels(I ordered Project 6GR's in 19x10 square), I'll burn off these tires, and upgrade to 285/35's all the way around.

Then, I'll take my PP wheels, and get a set of dedicated winter tires, and have those mounted. At the end of Oct, or when the temps are consistently below 45, I'll mount those on the car, and store the summer set up in my basement.

Come April/May, I'll swap them for my summer set up.

This might be a slightly more expensive route, but I'll be happy with the looks and handling and performance in all 4 seasons we experience in Upstate NY.

If you want to go the budget route, you could find the least expensive wheels that clear the PP brakes from tirerack/N4SM/American Muscle(they have some great sales once in a while), and mount good winters on them. Keep your stock wheels for summer.

I think the cheapest option is just buying winter tires and having them switched out seasonally, but then you're paying for mounting and balancing every couple of months, so there's a hidden cost.

i have the PP EB and the 18' rims will clear the breaks no issues. You should get a set of winter 18' rims and snow tires good ones like the blizzaks ws80. I know winter because i live in canada. Over time is also cheaper to have a seperate set of rims and tires for the winter than buying 19' winter tires which are more expensve and going to the shop to mount unmout and balance tires
