"Mustang", In the breed of horses, a Mustang is a PONY
Not a thoroughbred, quarterhorse, arabian, or anything else.

For many forms of competition, the official definition of a pony is a horse that measures less than 14.2 hands (58 inches, 147 cm) at the withers. Standard horses are 14.2 or taller.

So back in the inception date the car called Mustang was smaller than most American Production cars.
So the word Mustang fit the concept of being smaller, yet rugged, enduring, stamina, powerful in a smaller package.
Watch the movie Hidalgo if you want to see what a Mustang can do...

OK geezer, get over it. We’ve been calling them Stang’s for over 50 years. It’s a nickname. :like:
Back in the 1960's, nobody I knew ever called the Mustang a 'Stang. Or for that matter, chopped the name Corvette down to 'Vette.

I suspect " 'Stang " became more popular with the rise of internet message boards.

That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. My wife had a 65’ and we referred to it as a Stang. Whatever, it was just a nickname. Nothing to get bothered about.

The Mustang was originally named Mustang after the legendary WWII fighter plane the P-51 Mustang but study groups showed that people identified the name with the wild free horses of the west.

Just to put a finer point in it, Ford was inspired by the P-51 to use the name Mustang. The airplane was named for the horse. Also, Ford didn't put an emblem of an airplane in a hanger on the grille, but rather the horse in a corral. The car is named after a horse, like the airplane, because of the admiration for the airplane.

Obviously the horse is the ultimate origin here.

I have my doubts that either the cowboys of the Old West or WWII fighter jocks ever referred to the Mustang rides of their time as 'Stangs, though.

They likely referred to them as their "whip".

The P-51 Mustang is widely recognized as the greatest fighter plane of all time. :flag:

For sure. Even though the F4U Corsair was slightly faster . . . and that's a name recently resurrected out of Lincoln's past.

Ah David, please lighten up. Your language is uncalled for. Maybe you didn't understand the smilies. I was kidding.
