For what it's worth, I basically did your #2 choice. The main difference is, my old car has been paid off for four years, and wouldn't be worth anything worthwhile on trade-in. Also, it's rather nice having a beater car to drive in the crappy snow and ice we've had here lately, and it will also be nice in the warmer months when I'm driving down sketchy dirt roads in the mountains to go hiking (once my old Scion dies, it will likely get replaced with something awd with ground clearance for that reason alone.)
Also, its nice having two cars. I've had a few too many situations in the past couple of years where I couldn't get to work due to my car being down for repairs. Luckily I have a job which allows me to work remotely, but not everyone has that luxury.
