Last spring i ordered kooks 1-7/8" long tube headers with off road cats. But this was before i had a deal on a stage 2 whipple fall in my lap. So those cats will simply not do. Fast forward a month i recieved my long tubes and i had ordered a pair of gesi g-sport 850hp rated (each) epa approved cats i was going to have put in place of the hi flow cats. That was last july and i still dont have them and every dealer i look at says long backorder no eta on those. And the place i ordered them from keeps telling me they dont know when they will see them. So i have a set of longtubes never installed that are coated i want to install, spring is around the corner and i have no cats i can use.... not sure if i just sell the longtubes and stick with stock or install the long tubes but run catless for a while though i dont really want to smell the fuel and such when i sit in traffic. I dont have emissions testing in my state but the way the epa has been acting im not all that keen on rolling the dice. Also not sure how the tune will act going from no cats to cats. Retuning would suck with the guy i want to do the dyno tune seams like he is always a month out.

Very confused on what to do. I want to go to the track this summer as i didnt last year with all the waiting however i really dont want to melt my stock cats.....

Your thoughts?

what is a Kooks off road cat? You mean the non-green cat as opposed to no cats at all (right?)
I had a similar set up on my 2014 with (regular) catted Stainless works 1 7/8" LTs and had zero issues running it with the Roush. Was making 600 wheel.

I believe you can run the stock manifolds with cats at that power level.

Some chatter about this topic on this thread

Just a heads up, running long tubes with kooks cats is not epa friendly. The offense is removing the functioning cats in the first place. I would still do it anyway because I wouldn’t want to deal with the smell either but keep in mind if someone at epa really wanted to make your life difficult they could. Unlikely, but possible.

what is a Kooks off road cat? I thought Kooks had the green cats, which are approved for everywhere. Does Kooks also sell a non-green cat?
Yes kooks offers a high flow cat (non epa approved) and a green cat that is approved for a whole lot more money. However they are not rated to hold up against my hp anyway or at least i would be right at the upper limit with little to no headroom. With me planning to track the car thats going to make a lot of heat and flow so i want more headroom

Thats what i was worried about. But the gesi cats i ordered are EPA approve and certified at least. So i should be good to go i hope if i ever get the things, lol.

I used to live in CA and got popped for exhaust. State smog ref, court, it was not fun. I will do headers on my mustang hopefully soon so I obviously didn’t learn a lesson and I don’t care what the epa says but it’s always nice to at least know what you’re getting into when you roll some dice lol
Make sure you post up some video when you get them installed :like:

I have yet to hear of any longtubes that are fully legal, they can say they reduce emissions to the acceptable amount but as others have said the original offense is the movement of cats to a different area of the exhaust system (as stupid as that sounds) so if your going long tubes just go balls out!!

If your state does no testing there wouldn't be a reason for someone to find out, I have never really minded the catless smell.

Sorry to high jack your post but I have a question. I just ordered a set of Kooks 1 7/8" catted LT headers and my question is do they come with the adaptor to hook them up to a 3 inch exhaust system or do they come with the oem adaptor connector.

Thank you,

Go off-road for now, but don’t cancel you order for the cats. Try out the off-road setup for a while and if it’s not bad too with the fumes, then you can either stick with that setup and cancel the cat order, or continue waiting on them and swap them out when they arrive.
