We just got our utility bill...$320, highest it has ever been by about $50. We don't keep our house very warm, 66 - 67 during the day and 62 at night. It's a small, well insulated house. We aren't trying to be frugal, we have always been most comfortable with the temp in the mid 60s, indoor or out.

Are you all electric? That sounds very high. We downsized into a 3,000sf house and our recent gas bill was around $240. Our house was built in 1904 and the wall insulation is nil. I have a 90% efficient furnace and am installing a heat pump in the spring along with a couple mini splits to control the temps a little better and knock down my bills.

It’s greed and nothing more ….

Big Corp walking all over everyone and no one can do a thing about it…

OH come on already, "Big Corp walking all over everyone" there is no free ride. You have a job you like to get paid, you want a raise, bennies? That's a part of the cost with Big Corp.

The "Big Corp walking all over everyone" is a lame worn-out argument today. it's right there with the folks that believe the earth is flat, find another soapbox.

If people don’t like how high their gas bill is they should just switch to another gas provider.

That would be easy if the home was on propane. Not so easy when you are handcuffed to one piped in natural gas provider. For me that would be PG&E, no other options.

Same furnace output and efficiency here, LP costs double on the low side compared to natural gas. Natural gas cost for heat is about a 1/4 what the electrical equivalent would be. Electric is high, especially in the summer with the demands of ac. Solar is a viable alternative to offset the electrical costs, but the reality is unless your bills are in the several hundred dollars range the cost of the install on the retail level will never pay for itself.
Another poster brought up transportation costs. I’d dance a jig if my costs for service vehicles and equipment had only changed roughly ten percent in the last few years. Being those costs are all diesel we all know where that was and currently is.
As much as it tweeks us all on the cost increases theres nothing any of us are going to be able to do about it. We’re to far down the chain to make any impact in that regard.

I live in SoCal and haven’t turned on the heat since I moved here. There is no fucking winter here. My windows are open as I type this. Am I still moving out of this shitty state? The first chance I get.

No, mostly natural gas for heat, except the basement is electric. All appliances are electric. HVAC is all recent top of the line Lennox. I suspect being retired is contributing to our utility costs, as I spend a lot of time in the basement working on my hobbies, now. Plus, we have several big screen TVs on most of the time, along with computers.
