If this was a dual clutch automatic with paddle shifters we were talking about, I'd totally agree. Autos are admittedly great, when tuned and paired with a proper torque converter, for drag racing. For everything else, the traditional automatics like in the mustang are no substitute for a manual transmission. You don't have to worry about overheating fluid, or rubber bands, or any of that with a manual. Generally, outside of a clutch replacement every 100k or so, a manual transmission is much more reliable. That said, I prefer to DRIVE my cars. If the mustang was offered with self steering, would you let it steer for you all the time? If you're a car guy, my guess would be no. This is how I personally feel about transmissions.
Real car guy? Last I looked it was a real car I'm making payments for. Manually rowing gears is pointless in a passenger vehicle. You're not connected anymore to your machine than I am. You're just doing pointless work I'm not. The machine is much better and efficient at changing gears on it's own.

The simplest way to avoid mis-shifts is proper hand/grip placement on the shifter.

1>2 - traditional grip with your hand on top of the shifter head pulling back toward you. Your body mechanics automatically pulls the shifter into 2.
2>3 - place the shifter head on your thumb palm pad and push forward. Because of the shifter placement in your hand, and the natural extension movement of your arm you will push forward and away directly into third.
3>4 - "hook/sloth" grip. Hook your hand around the front of the shifter with your Palm facing away from you and pull back. Your arm geometry alone insures you will never go back to 2nd. At most you may miss shift into 6th.
4>5 - same as 2>3.
5>6 - same as 3>4.

Miss shifts often come from gripping the shifter in the traditional "hand on top of the shifter head" style and slamming gears. Your arm/shoulder geometry and mechanics will cause you to miss gates and pull/push into the wrong one. Try this once with your car off, you can slam gears super fast and very rarely will miss shifts. The ones you do go up gears and not down causing clutch, tranny, and motor issues.

It's not about efficiency. It's a disconnect you'll never understand, and that's ok. You love your car, I love mine. It's all good. No need for the bickering.

Just because you are not skilled enough to get the most of out a manual transmission doesn't mean it is worse.

Which one do you think is faster at a road course, an AT or MT? With you, obviously an AT, but that' doesn't make it better.

Some people track their cars (by track I mean road course, not drag racing) and an AT is by far worse for that.

Not to mention AT sounds horrible when shifting, and some people very much dislike the way the car feels with it, I know I do.

EDIT: I always shift with pressure on the stick only where it needs, I never ever grab the shifter with my fist. For example going from 3rd to 4th, it is just a straight down pull, the only part of the stick that touches my hand is the side towards the front, nothing else. That way there is no way to misshift

If you're grabbing the shifter from all sides/the top, you're doing it wrong.

I am on my 3rd GT with MT82 transmission and have never had an issue ever. There are some defective units out there (as with manufacture). This transmission does need to be operated with finesse but the biggest issue with the MT82 is the operator...
For big power and regular drag racing the 6R80 is the way to go, but stock with some bolt-ons the MT82 is fine. Some people just aren't suited to drive manual and should stick with auto. I personally find auto boring and enjoy the control and feel of manual.

It's all in fun. I'm not bickering. Debating is a better word.

I'm a professional driver. I'm paid well to drive a 13 speed mack in places most wouldn't want to drive a car through much less an eighteen wheeler with a 48ft trailer weighing 84k pounds total. I'd say I'm skilled enough with manual transmissions.

i've always admired how you guys can back that container up with no effort into a receiving dock in all sorts of angles. but i'm pretty sure from your username that you dont haul that kind of cargo. regardless, i'm sure it takes a great amount of skill

When the fastest you've driven your mustang is as fast as your drive your trucks, It is no surprise you'd want it to be automatic.

To each his own. Tracking a slushbox is the last thing I'd find efficient

If I had to drive that thing day in and day out I'd want an auto for my personal car as well. Tons of respect for what truckers can do with those behemoths.

If you were at the top of 3rd when you shifted I'm surprised the shifter went into second...unless it was being manhandled...did the synchro zing like a mofo, or did it just explode? That might be why they're quoting a new trans...

An ex trucker (18 wheeler/class A) myself, my primary car at the time was a Speed 3 (manual).
The differences between operating a manual truck and manual performance car are like comparing apples to oranges really.
Even though I am very good at both :), being an expert in one doesn't automatically make you an expert in the other...
