Anyone run an aftermarket intercooler with their Vortech setup? Running out of CFM on mine and looking for a higher flowing replacement. If you did, what do you go with? dimensions for extra credit. Yea, I'm lazy.

In for an answer, might do it down the road.

They do cool great, but the pressure drop from being a tight horizonal flow core is huge. They were originally intended for turbo applications. As long as there's room to pulley down to make up for that 2-4psi loss, then its OK as well.
Can you elaborate on intercooler requirements of a turbo setup versus centrifugal?

It's not so much requirements, but ceiling of limits with the compressor and what flow/boost you are trying to achieve. Since most turbo setups have the ability to make up for large pressure drops across the intercooler core by adjusting wastegates, total attainable airflow isn't affected as much. So you can still reach boost targets by just demanding more from the compressor. Many centrifugals are spun pretty high already, and when dealing with large pressure drops, having to pulley down (assuming you have RPM headroom) and reaching belt slip problems etc can be annoying and almost out of reach. I dealt with this many times in the past, and the final solution was to move to quality vertical flow intercoolers (Such as many Bell/Procharger units), which cooled the IAT almost just as well, but only half the pressure drop.

You remember the old days without I/C being NEEDED with high octane fuel. Throw on a cheap CX horizontal flow I/C, and boom 3-5psi drop in boost. Obviously the air charge temps drops tremendously, which also is part of the pressure drop causing the need to spin the centri faster as well.

Agreed.

I’m not so sure that there would be a large drop. The core is as large as many companies but at 4” thick instead of 3” like most companies

You'd think, but they are of a rather thick internal bar and plate design. Heavy thick, durable, cools the most out of all designs, but also has the highest pressure drop. Vertical flow tube and fin is usually the best design for ample cooling and the least pressure drop. Many have inlet/outlets on the same side because of design, but there are some that have end tanks of each side as well.

The pic you posted is a bar and plate unit.

I ran a custom setup on my 18 with a dual BV57 setup as well. A local fabricator should be able to get one made for you as well. Vortech doesn't have any direct bolt in upgrade setups.

Feel Free to DM me or call with any questions.
