Current Boss 302 engine makes 444 HP @ 7400 RPM according to Ford. That means 315 lb-ft @ 7400 RPM. To reach 500 HP @ 7500 RPM, you'd need 350 lb-ft.

Direct injection will help, as you should get a some improvement in airflow by simply replacing the fuel added during port injection with air. You could also bump the compression ratio, which would help make more power. So, it might be possible to get 500 HP @ 7500 RPM with a direct injected, highly optimized engine, especially if a little bit of displacement is gained by increasing bore and valve size. IMO those power levels won't be seen except in a Boss equivalent product. Would be pretty sweet though!

Not a production engine.

You can get 500+ out of a Boss with aftermarket parts pretty easily, but production engines tend to be detuned to be much safer for the idiots that will run low grade fuel, drive them into the ground in extreme heat, cold, etc, and for warranty and durability purposes.

It may not currently be a production engine, however it is a Ford Factory Retail engine - so the technology exists, and your BOSS example is further evidence of that - although not in official guise with aftermarket mods.

The issue was is it possible to achieve 500hp from a N/A 5.2L.

Ferrari 458 Italia - 4.5L 562 hp @ 9000 rpm
Ferrari California - 4.3L 453 hp @ 7750 rpm

The latter would indicate that it is possible to achieve 500+ hp from 5.2L, but it would put it in the upper ranks of specific output for a naturally aspirated v8.

Again, just IMO.
