I am helping a buddy swap his whipple car to an auto and a lund tune. They said we need the VMP IAT harness and I was curious what this does. I know the whipple comes with two different harnesses depending on if you buy it with the tune or the tuner kit. If you have the whipple with the tuner kit harness do you still need the VMP relocation harness and sensor?

Getting ready to put my Whipple on(tuner kit)...tuned by Lund. I know Lund requires it and it didn't come with the kit.

to my knowledge any responsible tuner will require it. I believe whipple is the only calibration that doesn't use it in order to properly read post intercooler temps. I bought the full kit and needed / wanted one anyway. Hopefully someone with the tuner system will confirm. I had no idea there was a difference but it would make sense I guess.

I think there is a different harness with the tuner kit that runs the fans and intercooler pump on key on not off the computer. My guess is this is needed because the change to the IAT harness bypasses the function of turning the fans and intercooler pump by temp.

Lund required this to tune mine. Also PBD and VMP require it. What this does is takes the "boosted" air temps instead of the temperature of the air coming into the intake. I believe this gives them more information on what is going on for timing vs heat.

Whipple still uses a post intercooler IAT sensor, along with the one at the MAF. The problem is, only Whipple's tune can access the signal to read the one after the intercooler. Any other tuner will need the harness to read post-intercooler IAT. If you use the VMP harness with the Whipple tune, it will screw up the calibration since the Whipple tune looks both pre and post-intercooler.

With the Whipple tune, the fans and pump are on all the time, they are not controlled by temperature. However, I think they do have the capability to set a check engine light if the pump isn't operating, but I'm not positive on that.

I think that the main difference with the tuner kit is that it doesn't send the post-intercooler IAT sensor to the harness where they can read the temperature. This is because a tuner won't have access to that signal, they are doing something special with their Ford-written tune that uses one of the harnesses that gets disconnected from the back of the intake manifold.

Yea you will need the VMP IAT2 harness. basically runs from the MAF to a hole that's been pre drilled on the drivers side of the lower intake manifold, like others have said its so lund can see post blower temps for safer tuning

I think theyre like 100 bucks not too bad

It changes the IAT to post intercooler so the tuner can use IAT timing to add/reduce timing based on charge temp. So for example if your intercooler pump takes a dump, timing will be pulled as charge temps rise, thus saving the engine. Also lets you view the post intercooler charge temp on the dash, which is handy.

I started with the Whipple calibration and the pump turn on signal was controlled via a harness and IMRC signal they tap into. It would not come on with my Lund tune (I also switched to the VMP IAT harness). I had to hardwire my pump relay to a fuse in the front fuse block to come on with the key) - I used the one Whipple recommended which I want to say was ABS possibly? That got my pump coming on with the key and I got to tuning. I can say I used the VMP harness with the Whipple tune once and it worked fine - no engine lights, IAT's read post blower - and the car was happy. Not sure if that helps or hinders but I've been down that road. It shows on the dash as post blower temp in F just like before.

I think whipple offers there kit with a tuner harness that enables the intercooler pump off key vs IMRC harness but I am not sure.
