upgrade just speakers

I will update in a few days when I get the sub in. Also, I would be interested to know of any "bolt in" replacement speakers for the doors. Cost effective, of course. Is there a kit available?

Where do you plan to locate the 10" Blaupunkt sub? At least in the convertible, it would not fit back into the trunks side area (like the oem one does). In the convertible, it looks like it could lay on it's back, top slid forward to the seat back, with bottom of sub facing the back at the main trunk space. Don't know if being 'right under and close to' the sheet metal of the convertible top storage space would be bad acoustically or not.

I'm hoping to fit it where the factory sub goes. All said and done, if it sounds a lot better somewhere else then I'll put it there. It has quick disconnect harnesses so I can just unplug and remove for trips if I need more space.

Don't know the answer to that one. I may replace them but am on the fence now as the rears made a big difference. I still need to know the size of the top door speaker. (mid)

Top door speaker looks like 3 1/2"

Finally got the time to swap out the rear deck speakers. I swapped them with a pair of JBL GTO 629s. Install wasnt to bad. My 60 year old body doesnt bend or fit into tight work spaces the way it used to. The back screws were a pain. Plastic brackets supplied with the JBLs were a perfect fit and an easy mount.
The stock speakers were paper and lightweight plastic crap. Ford should be embarassed putting them in a car and calling it a "Premium" system.
New JBLs really woke up the sound. Definitely more volume from the same signal and a fuller sound. Bass is better, but is still not where it should be. Definitely worth the time and money to get rid of the stock speakers.

Did you install a better amp, or are they being powered off stock set-up? I will prob do the same.

I put the same in mine. Did you disconnect the mic? I'm curious to hear from the other eco owners who swapped speakers, I swear it sounds noticeably better parked than when I'm moving (taking road noise into account). I'm wondering if the sound canceling while driving is affecting the output/ having some effect on the headunit

Thanks for the info. I have the base stereo in my V6 convertible. So I have rear speakers in the side panels (no rear deck ;o) A few Q's:
- Do you have any recommendations for door and rear side panel speakers?
- Done/seen any installs of the 80001nex head unit yet? I guess we still need an aftermarket bezel kit, which is not likely until fall?

What is your experience of upgrading just speakers with base stereos (esp. convertibles ;o) ? What speakers did you use for doors (and rear sides in 'vert)?

A lot of people are going with the JBL's and for the price they're really good speakers. But when it comes down to speakers everyones ears are different and every car is different. My best advice is to listen to as many as you can to find out what you like. Personally I like Alpine Type R's and Pioneer D series but I recommend amping them. JBL, Polk, infinity, kicker ks series, JL, and alpine type s are all good speakers that don't need to be amped in the price $75-$130 but the best speakers ive heard RECENTLY have been Focal, mcintosh, and kicker QS series. If you got a convertible gets some speakers that don't have tinny highs, have good mids, and add a mini amp if you don't wanna spend the money on a traditional 4ch as amp. I haven't got my hands on too many 15 stangs yet so I'm still playing around with audio solutions and I haven't heard when a dash kit will be available yet.

No, I didnt even think about that. You might have a point. If I decide to put in a small amplified woofer in the back I will probably disconnect the mic.

I got the Sub hooked up yesterday. Gain and Bass boost are not even halfway up and the radio bass is midway (flat) and it sounds great. Hits really hard for a 10''. Keep in mind big bass is not my thing though I do like the occasional old school hip hop. For the money it was perfect for me. As far as fitment, it will not go in the side cubby as it's an inch or so too tall. I have mine in the back due to a short ground wire so that will be remedied soon. Please pardon the wiring job as it is temporary. Do need to figure out how to mount the sub so it will not move, but can come out quickly for vacations and such. Sorry about the blurry pic, but you get the idea. Amazon was $207 and the wiring kit was around $16.

Can I ask why you decided to install it on the left side showing all the wires? Seems like it was meant for the right side to hide everything and look better. :shrug:
