I traded my 2012 in on the 15 and used KBB just fine. After some pretty intense haggling (threatened to just keep my 2012 several times) the dealer agreed to a number very close to the "excellent condition" KBB trade in value for the car. It only had 14k miles on it, was garage kept, and completely stock with maintenance records so I wasn't going to take less for it.
Pretty much like mine. One small door dent other than that its garage kept, no winters, Roush exhust and CAI. Stock tires still have the factory nubs since i'm keeping my SVE's.

I wouldn't waste my time with Carmax again, they tried to give me $2,500 for my last car and the dealer gave me $4,000 without any negotiation

No tax break like that here in the Great White North. Trade-in buys you less hassle, but also many thousands less than a private sale.
We have that law here in Ontario. Tax is only on the net difference between car cost and trade-in.

Hmmm. I will have to look into it here. Now that I think about it, I've only traded in once and in that case I had the dealer cut me a cheque as I had 0% financing and didn't want to put anything down.

It's the same in BC. So, assuming a sales tax of 7% and a trade value of $10,000, you'd have to sell privately for $10,700 to receive the same value. Is that what's being said?

I traded my 13 auto premium GT at a ford dealer and got 27k (even swap), I think I did pretty well considering they are listing it for 28.4k. In return I got a low mileage 2013 Edge Sport pre-certified as my DD and they wanted 29.9k. Just gotta negotiate hard and dont be afraid to walk. Next toy will be a GT 350 or the next ZL1/Z28 generation.

kbb.com, Edmunds.com, nada.com are all good opinions on car values. Also, autotrader.com has a feature called "Trade In Marketplace" where if you input all the data on your car correctly, they'll actually email you a bid on the car directly. None of the other value websites will actually buy your car, online autotrader.com will.

Edmunds is the most accurate, unless you have access to the black books from the dealer with the "auction" prices. They try to pull the auction price all the time down here, I just call bluff on that.

The reason dealers offer auction pricing is because if it ends up being glued to the lot, they know they can just take it to auction and let some 2nd tier dealer try to sell it.

My dealer offered me $10k for my 2011 Mustang V6 MCA MT Premium with 45k miles and it was immaculately kept with service records (all done at their dealership). Carmax wanted me to wait nearly 2 hours for an estimate so I walked. I looked at what Carmax was selling a comparable car for ($17-$19k) and what private parties were selling a comparable car for ($14-16k) and priced mine at $15,999. I ended up selling as a private party for $15,500. Mine also had the remainder of a 6 year/100k PremiumCARE Ford ESP plan. That car was $31k MSRP new. 50% after 5 years... not too bad.

I expected the dealer to come in around $12k. I also knew I could get $14k without trying too hard via private party. Turns out, I did WAY better just by placing 2 free ads and taking the time to detail it and document it. Had the dealer offered closer to $13k, there would have been meat on the bone for everyone. Instead, he lost that side of the deal and put $5,500 extra in my pocket.

I've never been a fan of the massive depreciation in Ford's in general but the Mustangs do pretty well overall if you can keep the dealer from taking YOUR money out of your pocket.
