Really it depends on the dealer. What I did was print out KBB, NADA, Blackbook, & Edmunds values for my car. Then I printed off Autotrader what a 2005 Mustang GT was selling for within 50 miles of my house, then printed out my mod list. When he asked what I was looking for I told him and then backed it up with my paperwork. It was the easiest trade in I ever dealt with. This method plus Xplan pricing, I think I got about the best deal I possibly could! It shows the dealer that you at least took the time to do some research and that you're no chump they can screw over!
You're doing it right! I would also recommend getting an official carmax appraisal done prior to dealers appraisal.

I'll have to give that a try. When I read the "Conditions" my car has almost no flaws. I mean, it only has 16k miles so it's hard to do too much in that time. The trade numbers I've been given always seem to downgrade it a notch.

So I'm basically ready to order. Looking at ordering in late December (during the plant shutdown) for a March or late April delivery. I have my deposit ready and my down payment, now i need to figure out a rough estimate for my trade.

I have a 2011 Ford Taurus SEL. 58k miles, Leather, heated seats, SYNC, and reverse sensors. Ive also replaced the stock Michelins recently for a set of Goodyear Assurance FuelMax tires. They have about 95% tread on them.

Im confused as to how i should anticipate trade in value. Interior is super clean, exterior is good, just needs a good wash. There are a few small chips because our roads suck really badly, and maintained very well. Ive checked KBB, NADA guides and Black book. KBB is about 12,500 in good condition, NADA is around 13,500 in good condition, and Black Book is about 14,000 in "clean" condition, with dealer retail around 16,500. I don't know what to believe, so i ask, what does the dealers use to determine trade in value?
They will likely offer you @ 65%—75% of KBB depending on dealership. I would say they will offer you 8500.00 and you could get them up yo about 9375.00. AutoTrader.com is a great site to give you at least a bargaining ball park estimate.

An offer of 9k is an insult, in my opinion. Id probably walk away at that.

My dealer gives me 100% of the clean trade in value every time. No matter tire condition or anything. I walk in, x plan (or less if they are inclined, I'm ok with x most of the time), tell them what I have, miles and what I want and we do the deal. They know I don't like bickering and they know I'll be back next time. That said, I did pay msrp for the LE but everything else was business as usual for us.

The Carmax thing is also a pretty good idea. Also, you cant go in there acting like a jerk showing them your research saying its this or the high road. I think thats where people can go wrong sometimes. They want you to feel like you got a good deal, and you need them to feel the same way. I think that as long as it goes both ways, dealers and owners can have a good relationship for years.

Yeah im going with the dealer i bought my Taurus from. Ive been going to them for my servicing and the salesmen are all very nice. Im pretty sure theyll give me a fair value for my trade. They dont move much Mustangs but they do move alot of F-150s.

Most use kbb or blackbook at the same time they still do an eval and will offer you their assumed value...if your car has any issues, that will affect your trade in so I would make sure you clean your car inside and out. I could have done private sale but even the offered price... was too low but using the black friday and dealer cash, made up the difference a bit better than bidders

Most Dealers use the Hearst Publications "Black Book". It usually has the lowest Trade In Values based on local Auction Sales. Regardless of what "book" they use, be prepared for them to attempt to "steal" your Vehicle from you when you trade it in. Best bet is run an ad on Craigslist and try to sell it privately or bring it to CarMax for an appraisal if its a late model, clean with low mileage.
