Hello all,

I recently just purchased a 2016 Mustang GT Premium w/ PP and put on about 800 miles on it.

The only modifications it has are the Roush intake and GT350 steering wheel.

Today as I was pulling out of my neighborhood on a rainy day turning into the main street, I felt the traction control kick in to keep my wheels from spinning. A good thing, I thought.

Then seconds after that, the engine started to stutter and struggled to get up to speed. My screen lit up with big orange wrench saying Service Vehicle. Eventually the engine shut itself off. I was able to roll off the road and restart the engine. The screen then said Service Traction Control and Traction Control Unavailable. CEL also came on

From then on, every time I try to go above 2500 rpm, the engine stutters again and wouldn't let me go above. I suspect it's the car's Limp Mode, and I was able to limp it home.

I took my beater Mazda and went to work right away, so I didn't have the time to troubleshoot. But it was silky smooth under 2500 rpm.

What do you think could be the cause?

My thoughts:
  • Rain ingestion from the Roush intake? It was sitting in the rain for a night and water could drip into the intake from the hood vent. But the intake was dry - I checked before started the car.
  • MAF sensor issue during intake installation? But it was done 3 weeks ago, problem would have been immediate. The Fuel/Air ratio on the screen also seem normal.
  • Wheel speed sensor malfunction? Is this even a common problem? How did I manage to break it?

Again, the car only has 800 miles on it, I have not driven it hard. Especially not the night before because of the rain.

Should I take it to the dealer with the Roush intake installed or revert back to stock air box? The last thing I want is for them to blame it on the intake a slam a big red stamp on my record that voids my warranty on a brand new car!

Please help :(

Thanks!!

I had some problems with burned coils on my Skoda Superb. If it was raining a lot, the underhood would become moist and if the engine was not properly heated before pushing the pedal to the metal, I would burn one coil.
I had one problem with a coil that wasn't burnt, but was more dead than alive. The car drove ok and then started to shake and tremble and wouldn't let me accelerate at all.
Unless you had the intake inside a puddle I doubt water ingestion is the issue.

this has happened to me when going to fast in reverse (twice). I just parked the car for the night and next morning was good as new. I didn't run into stalling issue though.

I got some weird stuff when the MAF sensor wasnt plugged all the way in but it was immediate when you try to start the car

Thanks for all the help guys!

I came back from work, fired it up, and the CEL was still on. Let it idle for 5 min and then took her out for a spin up to 5k rpm, drove just fine!

After 1 shut down and restart, the CEL went away.

I don't know what happened, and hopefully it will never come back. But man, this is a huge blow my confidence towards the car after only owning it for 800 miles! What if I had gotten rid of my beater?!

Will take it to an Autozone to see if they can read the old code and report back.

Thanks again!

Took it to Autozone and got this Error code:

P061B - Internal Control Module Torque Calculation Performance
Description: Indicates a calculation error occurred in the powertrain control module (PCM).

Seems like a software bug. Perhaps it got some input parameters that it didnt know how to process and went to limp mode to be safe?

Thats what a tune is for but the Roush with the restrictor shouldn't require a tune. Interesting!

Hmm, you think that code can be related to the intake? I was thinking it's just because its a rainy day and the computer was trying to control torque based on the inputs from the wheel speed sensors, but got confused and triggered the code.

Have you seen people with intake mod getting this code? Thanks!

Nope, i just jumped to a conclusion. Whatever it is, don't forget to change back to your stock intake before service! Just to be on the safe side.

Haha gotcha. You're right, its worth the ~30 min to swap it back!
