TPMS Question

Hello All,
I had the tpms sensor light come on after having new tires mounted on the factory wheels at a tire plus. After driving a few weeks the tpms light is on. I took it the dealer for my oil change and asked them to reset tpms . They said whoever installed the tires didn't put sensor in one of the tires. I then took it back to tire plus in which the tech informed me that they did and sometimes the battery goes bad. My car is a 2015 gt premium with 19inch wheels. So I got the relearn ford tool and tried to do the procedure myself but all the tires except the passenger rear sounded with the horn. So I purchased at tpms motorcraft stem from amazon got it installed and in still wont relearn. Does the tpms stem I installed needed to be programmed before being placed in the tire? Can it be programmed while its inside the wheel already? If so how and what tool do I need outside of the Ford relearning tool. That dam tpms sensor on the dash is so irrating after every start up.

You shouldn’t have to do anything once it’s installed. It figures it all out on it’s on. I installed four aftermarket wheels with Ford tpms from amazon as you. I think I may have had to drive it a couple of miles before it started reading them.

Ok I hope its the same for me. I will be around 50 miles between my job and home tomorrow. Im just hope the sensor wasn't suppose to be programmed 1st.

At least on my 2019, the TPMS resets with about 10 miles of driving, confirmed when I put my snow tires on back in November.

Just to be clear, you did break down the tire to replace the sensor device correct? Otherwise all you replaced was the valve stem itself. 2015 - 2017 use the same TPMS sensor. To run the KMC district wheels from my 14 GT on my current 17 GT, I had to have all the TPMS sensors replaced because 11-14 are not compatible with 15+. This required my good friend who is a tire store manager to break down all four tires (I watched and we talked as he was working) and replace the sensors. Your sensor is either damaged OR the battery is dead. You need to replace the sensor housing mounting in the rim which requires tire removal. The tire store should have asked you if you wanted to replace the TPMS sensors due to the age of the car. If you chose not to do this its on you. If they failed to ask I see it as being on them. And yes the sensors do have to be reprogrammed out of the box.

I've been changing from snow to summer tires for 3 years now, and every time, I just drive a few miles and it learns the new sensors with no help from me. I bought the little remote pushbutton thingy, but I've never needed to use it.

And yes the sensors do have to be reprogrammed out of the box.

The sensors were new and just out of the box (came with the wheel/tire set from Tire Rack) and had never been on a car before. The car read and programmed the sensors by itself and with no input from me with about 10 miles of driving. Had I wanted it, Tire Rack would have sold me a programmer that would have let me set them immediately instead of needing to drive a bit.

If sensors on two different sets are programmed to the same codes (as my stock and custom set are) the the TPMS system will see them and continue to work as normal. My factory codes were pulled on my stock sensors and the new sensors on the custom wheels were programmed to the same code. No issues.

Okay. Ever think there may be TPMS programming improvements on your 2019 that aren't on earlier models? It does happen. Mine on my 17 (same platform as a 15) had to be programmed. A lot of things changed post 2017 aside from a different front nose and direct injection.

I also put aftermarket wheels and tires on and the car reset the tpms after a few miles of driving. I also bought a tpms tool off of Amazon for about $15.00. Haven’t used it yet but glad I have it if I do need it.

I bought a set of wheels and snow tires from Tire Rack with TPSMs installed a year ago. My 2018 Ecoboost recognized the new sensors when I swap rims on its own within a few miles.
I have the ford gadget to reprogram the TPSMs, I needed to use it every time I swapped the snow tires on/off my 2008 V6 Convertible.

They will generally pick up without reprogramming, but you need the tool if they don't. If for some reason you have one that doesn't pickup (and the other 3 are fine), and won't re-calibrate using the toll, then there are pretty much 3 possibilities:
1. It's not there and they just put a standard valve stem in (unlikely, unless you took it to some off brand tire shop who hasn't worked on a car with TPMS)
2. It's damaged (could have happened during the mount/dismount process, or possibly the shipping process)
3. Battery is dead.

They are programmed when on the car after installation, not before.

I put a set of 2019 PP1 wheels with 2019 TMPS sensors on my 2017 GT and they synced up after one drive. No input needed on my end.

Just got my new wheels and tires mounted up. All TPMS synced up just backing the car out of the shop bay.
