Hello gang,

I've just completed my caliper powder coat and new disc and brake pads installation. I followed a youtube guy that was showing a brake job on a 2017 GT. When I dissassembled I was surprised to see 2 layers of sheet metal between the brake pads and the caliped on the front.

That guy didn't reinstalled the second layer of sheet metal on each side of the brake system. So I did exactly as he said.

Here is my question:

Is it ok or should I dissassemble again and reinstall the second layer of sheet metal?

This is my first brake job ever and I do not want to mess. Perdon my ignorance but I'm confused/ nervous this morning. I still didn't had a chance to do the road test btw.

Thanks a lot for your time and advices.

If you are talking about the shims that go between the caliper pistons and brake pads they are there for anti squealing.

If you don't have noise or if you don't mind brake noise leave them out. They serve no other purpose.

Thanks Dan ! Will see if I ever hear noise... I'll know what to do !!!

Life is bizarre! Add dishes that way the squeal will drop!!

two layers of sheet metal? You mean one layer on each of the left and right pads?

Yeah, that's supposed to be there.

There were 2 shims per side on the front brakes !! Yesterday afternoon I had remorses and removed the brake pads to see if I could add the second pair of shims ( 1 per side ) As I installed Powersto^Z26 in front, this is virtually impossible to add that second shim! The pad is a bit too big to accept the shim. So back to the point zero and reinstall as is. IE 1shim per side.

Will see tomorrow as I plan to do my first road trip of the season!

I have the Z26 pads on mine and the shims were installed from the factory, not easily removable.

Are you trying to reuse old shims? If so they are not needed.

Hello Dan

Yes I tried but was only possible to install 1 on each side as the others are too small. Tha nks for your input. Will see if 1 shim per side is ok ! I'm more confident today about the shims issue!
