Do the tire sensors rely on batteries?
One of the rear sensors stopped giving readings and the yellow tire light turns on every time.

Yes they do. Shelf life seems to be varied but anything at about 5 or 6 years onwards and they are at risk of losing battery power.

Batteries are not replaceable. The entire sensor must be replaced

The units have a few parts:

- Battery
- Accelerometer
- Transmitter
- Pressure sensor

Your car is listed as a 2016. Ten years is a good service life. I'd replace all four at once.

The 1180-B units are listed as supporting your car. While a training tool is supplied, these units are auto-sensing. Once the wheel is spinning, the accelerometer switches the unit on. The battery powers the pressure sensor and transmitter, then announces the pressure to the car. When first installing my wheels, the sensors reported to the car with the first few hundred feet/tens of meters.

The radio signals are picked-up by a receiver towards the rear of the car, in the area of the parcel shelf. This is the same receiver which picks up the key fob frequencies. Ultimately, the Body Control Module gets the information and puts it on display.

Discount Tire and other sites will sell their house brand. Most of these pieces will work just as well as Ford's. They often have enough inventory turns where you get fresh units. Being electronic items, I prefer the Ford units. YMMV.

Avoid eBay and deep discount sites; these often sell dated gear with dead batteries and counterfeits. I'd avoid buying from rim & tire "stylin' " shops; you don't know what it is they're installing, how old it is.
