I bought some MAF sensor cleaner from Advance Auto Parts. Hasn't been cleaned since I got the car I do not think. 24K miles on it.

Never cleaned a MAF sensor before. Any tips?

Unless you have a reason to believe it's dirty, leave it alone. It's not a part that normally needs cleaning.

If you decide to clean it, just spray it on and shake it off. Let it dry, then re-install it. Do not touch the sensor element.

Interesting. I've been reading opinions online that in general it is good to clean every time you change the oil and or change the air filter. I do have a suspicion that it is dirty because awhile back when I reinstalled my CAI I accidentally touched the sensor element- barely but I did. The car runs pretty good but I can't help feeling it can run smoother and maybe cleaning the MAF will help. And lastly just for peace of mind I guess.

Bluemustang, I’m interested to know if you did this and how it went? I’m thinking I need the same piece of mind at 40k miles..lol

It's not hard to clean a MAF sensor. Some air intake tubes may have to be removed to access the sensor on certain vehicles. Make sure the ignition is off, Unlock the safety clip on the sensor connector. Press down on the connectors release tab. Pull connector from sensor. Remove screw/s from sensor. Remove sensor and spray only with MAF sensor cleaner over the small wire/s in the sensor. Then allow to dry "fully" or blow dry with low air pressure till fully dry. Reinstall, and start vehicle. Don't turn the ignition On or try to start vehicle with connector off sensor or an engine code may appear which will have to be cleared later.

Thanks Lime1GT, my car runs fine but It's never been done and I've had oiled filters in there since the beginning so I thought it may be a good idea.

I had a fox body and the car would run like crap when the maf was dirty. Don't know if it makes a difference on an S550, but it can't hurt, as long as you are careful with it and use the maf cleaner.

CRC mass air flow sensor cleaner. Just make sure you remove the sensor when you clean it. It dries really fast with no residue. I clean my guns with the same spray on certain parts. Works well on both applications.
