i can't figure out how to get mine to program. I have genie brand garage door openers but can't figure it out...haven't spent much time with it either.

I have a genie and following book instructions worked the second time for me. Including putting the motor in program mode and programming it to the home link (like a new remote)

Also, if you have trouble with the certain genie types, the manual gives a number to call to get help.

Has anyone used this for anything other than a garage door? I have a storage unit with a remote gate that I'd like to sync up. I don't know what technology either uses to communicate. I'll try over the weekend but was just curious if its possible. thanks
I have a remote security gate which uses old style remotes that have 10 dip switches which must be set the same as the base unit.
My Infiniti has the built in programmable remote.
It amazed me but when I followed the directions to teach the car remote the code it worked.
You may be in a different situation because if the storage unit remote is not yours, you would not normally have access to the hand held remote and a commercial storage place would probably not let you borrow one of theirs for a few minutes. The remote access on my security gate does not keep track of the times I use the wireless remote but does keep track of the pushbutton access times.

Haven't tried the Ford unit yet (because I ordered a base GT) but am hopeful it will work. One of the things I intend to buy in a few months is a visor with the remote buttons. Having three clip on visor remotes is a real annoyance.

if "read the manual" was the answer, then this site would be dead. the way i see it, a guy asks a question, just indulge and answer. its not that big of a deal.

When programming your garage door, some models of Garage Door opener require you to use the "learn" button on the motor unit to recognize the cars signal.

i was thinking that's what i might have to do is make it learn like a new remote.

Read the manual, it's dirt simple and only takes a few seconds to program.
It's dirt simple unless you have an older garage door opener like me. Took me a fricken hour trying the way the manual says to do it first, before I finally figured out I had to use the learning mode by pushing the button on the opener itself (not the remote control) and then quickly holding the button on the visor.

Missed the most important point....it was asked..."what are these 3 buttons on my visor?" Hellllloooo.....read the manual. Total answer...how to use, etc. That's the simple point. I don't mine helping anyone at anytime...if I can....but, first help yourself a little too. IF a person can't even find the page in the manual ....read and easily find the his/her answer....then maybe no one can help...if they can't put forth the effort to help themselves.

This question....that was asked....hey....this isn't a heart transplant....
Nowhere in the manual does it answer the question "What are these buttons on my visor?" You can only find it out by reading about the garage-door opener feature, which is on page 114 of the manual. So you're saying that people should read 113 pages of the manual, rather than ask a quick question on a forum devoted to talking about this car.

You must be a ton of fun at parties.

The other weird thing for me is I thought I programmed all three buttons to activate my garage door, so it didn't matter which I pushed... but only the last one I programmed works now. Haven't tried to figure out why, if I just messed up, or if that is intentional for some reason. No, I haven't looked to see if the manual addresses this.:D

I get what you all are saying... and yeah the manual should be read. I too have an older garage door opener. I have tried to sync my homelink to my Chamberlin liftmaster garage door opener for 2 weeks now. I initially read the manual, yep I used the index, which gave be the basic sync procedures. after 10 tries with each button I went to the homelink website, which provided me verbatim the same instructions as our manual for every garage door model I looked up. so my next step was to use the "learn" feature. my only question is if I do this and it works, does it render my hand held remote obsolete? my wifes S550 does not have the homelink visor and will need the handheld remote. my question is not answered anywhere. I have two options... call homelink or ask you guys. I would hope that I can ask you guys without flack. I figure in not the only one that is in this situation.

Hell, I've been through the PDF of the manual fairly thoroughly and it'll be a month or two before I get my car....

The problem is...most manuals are written by people who have been working with the 'unit' for months or years. So, of course, the 'three buttons on the visor' are for the garage opener! I constantly run into "too much knowledge, not enough knowledge" statements in manuals. For example...how to find out how to spell a word if you don't know how to spell it...use a dictionary...but you need to know how it's spelled to find it!
That's why so many people come to these forums...to get to that first step. Don't just say..."well, if you don't know...we can't help you".
